The Greggs capital of Wales where you can find the most branches has been revealed

The Greggs capital of Wales has been revealed as one area of the country boasts a branch of the popular bakery chain for every 1,300 people. One area of the country has also ranked eighth nationally as a Greggs hotspot.

It's not often that you will walk down a high street in Wales and not find yourself greeted by one of the country's favourite chains. Whether that be Greggs, Costa, or other food and drink establishments, they seem to pop up on every street corner.

And some places are known for having them than others - for instance, Cardiff has three branches of lunch spot Pret-a-Manger, whereas Swansea has none. Or while Cafe Nero's can be spotted up and down the country, they are fairly rare in the Welsh capital.

According to figures by gov.uk, Wales has a total of 104 Costas and 166 Greggs. It also has 17 Caffe Neros, 47 Starbucks. Whereas London has a Pret on seemingly every corner, there are just three branches in Wales.

Known for its reasonably priced bakes, perhaps it's no surprise that Cathays South & Bute Park in Cardiff - a student hubbub - is best served for Greggs, with 10 branches in the area. This means there is a branch for every 1,301 people and the area ranks eighth nationally as a Greggs hotspot.

Stow Hill in Newport is Wales’ Costa capital. There are four branches in the area, one for every 1,678 people. Cardiff is also your only option for Pret, as it’s home to all three branches. As well as this, it’s the place with the fewest people per Caffe Nero. It has four branches, or one for every 3,252 people

If you fancy a Starbucks, the best place to go might be Rhuddlan & Bodelwyddan in Denbighshire where there are two branches, one for every 3,197 people.

Based on venues registered with local councils for food hygiene inspections, Costa is the UK’s biggest coffee chain. There were 2,661 Costa outlets as of February.

Greggs was the next most prolific with 2,150 outlets, almost double the 1,104 Starbucks shops across the UK. Caffe Nero, which has 616 venues, and Pret a Manger, which has 402, are less common.

The City of London is probably the easiest place to get a cup of coffee with a Costa, Caffe Nero, Greggs, Pret or Starbucks for every 108 people who live in the area. This is likely because while 10,938 people live in the Square Mile, it’s visited by many more workers and tourists.

The area has 16 Costas, six Greggs, 15 Starbucks, 14 Caffe Neros, and 50 Pret branches- one in eight of the company’s entire UK operation. Unsurprisingly, the City of London is the nation’s Pret capital.

City Centre South in Glasgow is the area best served by Costas, with one for every 664 people who live there. There are six Costas in the area, which contains Glasgow Central Station and St Vincent Street.

Data is based on Food Hygiene rating data from February, with locations matched to middle super output areas, intermediate zones and super output areas based on their postcode.
