The Greater Manchester Police jobs you can apply for now – including in Forensics and Firearms

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has a range of job vacancies across the region that you can apply for now. There are roles available in departments including IT, Forensics, and Fire and Explosives.

The team enforcing the law in Greater Manchester, GMP is one of the UK’s largest police forces and is responsible for keeping a population of almost three million people safe. In September 2022, GMP employed more than 7,500 police officers, as well as more than 4,000 members of police staff and community support officers, according to government data.

Its headquarters are situated just outside the city in Newton Heath, with separate divisions covering all the boroughs within Greater Manchester. GMP currently has many exciting job opportunities posted on its website, with varying degrees of experience and qualifications required.

LCH Researcher and Assistant – Forensic Laboratory Services Unit

£23,100 – £25,353 per annum (Pro Rata)

GMP’s Forensic Services Branch is seeking a Local Clearing House (LCH) Researcher/Administrator to assist in the recording and research of firearms and related materials.

Duties within this role include:

  • Ensuring all firearms related material seized, recovered or handed within GMP is recorded on the National Ballistics Intelligence Database and that relevant articles are forwarded to the Clearing House for further examination.
  • Undertaking daily research of relevant entries on GMP systems to identify relevant firearms incidents and recoveries and to identify mandatory and other potential National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NaBIS) Hub submission requirements.
  • Liaising with Exhibits Managers, Property Officers, Force Intelligence Bureau and where necessary external forensic service providers, to ensure that all firearms and ballistics material is brought to the attention of the Local Clearing House.

Candidates must have good verbal and written communication skills as they will need to produce written work to the required standard.

This is a part-time role with 21.75 hours required from Monday to Wednesday. It is based at GMP’s Vestigo House, Oldham.

Forensic Services Reception Assistant

£20,604 – £21,018 per annum

GMP is seeking a Reception Assistant to provide an efficient reception service for its Forensic Services Branch.

Duties within this role include:

  • Responsibility for the receipt, accurate recording and safe storage of exhibits and evidence including items of property, fingerprint dockets and lifts and photographic evidence from crime scenes submitted for Forensic examination.
  • Ensuring all records either computerised or on paper are accurate and meet the requirements relating to ISO procedures, continuity, disclosure and Data Protection.
  • Ensuring the security of the reception areas and stores at all times
  • Making sure the working environment complies with all Health and Safety polices and producers, including lifting, handling and transportation of equipment/materials.

Candidates must have a good record of attendance, at least during the last two years.

This is a full-time role with 36.25 hours required. It is based at GMP’s Vestigo House, Oldham.

Police Coroners Officer

£31,434 – £33,348 per annum

There are opportunities to join GMP as a Police Coroners Officer, a role that entails responsibility for the investigation of unexpected and unnatural deaths reported to HM Coroner.

Duties within this role include:

  • Attending scenes of unexpected and unnatural deaths, gathering information and evidence for HM Coroner.
  • Obtaining detailed and accurate witness statements from bereaved relatives, eye witnesses, professionals and expert witnesses.
  • Ensuring all exhibits including CCTV, Body Worn Video and other digital data relevant to the Coronial investigation is obtained and available for HM Coroner to assess admissibility.
  • Compiling and submitting the file of evidence to HM Coroner for Inquest proceedings.
  • Attending Coroners Court and, as a representative of GMP, giving oral evidence under oath at Inquest proceedings.
  • Attending the public mortuary to deal with queries raised by pathologists and mortuary technicians regarding, for example, concerns around the identification of the deceased or the discovery of injuries not previously recorded.
  • Managing several other issues that surround a coronial death, such as identifying and tracing next of kin, providing support and guidance to a range of people including bereaved relatives, carers and friends.

This is a very dynamic role so candidates must have excellent organisational skills, with the ability to identify and prioritise a challenging workload. Candidates must provide evidence that they are confident communicators with strong interpersonal skills and experience of dealing with members of the public.

They must also provide evidence that they can use a range of computer applications and possess good word processing skills, accurately inputting, recording and retrieving data and with experience in managing the use of spreadsheets. Knowledge of relevant Coronial legislation and the policy and procedures relating to the reporting and investigation of coronial deaths is also essential.

It is important that candidates have strong emotional resilience as the role will involve dealing with death on a daily basis, with the successful candidate being exposed to unpleasant situations involving death when attending scenes.

It is also essential that candidates have a full driving licence and access to a vehicle for business purposes as they will be required to work across different GMP locations.

This is a full-time role with 36.25 hours required. There is one vacancy based in Stockport and one vacancy based in Bolton.

Service Desk Analyst

£25,758 – £27,690 per annum

GMP is seeking a new member of staff with its Information Services Branch, providing IT support at its Manchester headquarters.

Duties within this role include:

  • Providing first line incident management support endeavouring to resolve IT incidents at first point of contact, using initial assessment and after appropriate categorisation using knowledge material.
  • The effective escalation and assignment of customer enquiries/incidents to the correct resolver group ensuring accurate information is provided and the process is delivered efficiently.
  • Playing a key role in developing and updating the knowledge management database used on the self-service portal.

Candidates must have substantial experience of working in an IT customer focused environment, providing first level support using remote diagnostic tools. A proven track record of effectively managing incidents whilst maintaining/exceeding business expectations and communication is also essential.

This is a full-time role with 36.25 hours required. It is based at GMP’s Central Park Complex in Newton Heath.

Criminal Justice and Custody Contract Manager

£37, 074 – £38,856 per annum

The Criminal Justice and Custody Branch has an opportunity for an experienced Contract Manager to join the team at its Manchester headquarters.

Duties within this role include:

  • Supporting the Head of Criminal Justice and Custody to develop and maintain a coordinated approach towards contract management, seeking compliance, value for money and advice on all areas of contract management.
  • Ensuring best value is achieved via the satisfactory delivery of contractual arrangements in respect of the Branch non pay related expenditure.
  • The management of contracts, commercial lifecycle, and framework agreements in which GMP is the lead authority, including managing relationship with suppliers, sourcing and managing contracts.
  • Acting as a single point of contact for the management of contract disputes and escalations.
  • Assuring and managing contracted suppliers against the compliance to their contractual obligations.

Candidates must have a relevant academic/professional qualification, Higher National Diploma/degree level or significant relevant experience. They must also have knowledge of relevant national, international, industry and professional standards/legislation associated with the role.

Significant experience of contract management and monitoring within the public sector or large private sector organisation is also essential.

This is a full-time role with 36.25 hours required. It is based at GMP’s Central Park Complex in Newton Heath.

Digital Forensic Investigator

£31,434 – £38,856 per annum

GMP has several opportunities within its Public Protection and Serious Crime Division, working as a member of the Digital Forensic Investigation Unit (DIU).

Duties within this role include:

  • Conducting intelligence led digital forensic investigations on a wide range of digital devices, providing evidence and expert interpretation of the evidence in a secure format acceptable to the court.
  • Working closely with others in the unit with different experience and specialisms, leading on cutting-edge research and development.
  • Conduct forensic examinations and analysis of a wide range of digital devices, using these and knowledge of criminal investigation to support complex, high-profile and challenging police cases.
  • Presenting evidence to police investigators, prosecutors and the courts, explaining complex digital evidence in a manner that can be understood by a wide range of audiences.

Candidates must have degree level qualification in a technical, digital forensic or computer related subject, or relevant experience demonstrating the same level of knowledge/experience. Completed Forensic Software Training must also have been completed to advanced level.

They must also have a good understanding of legislation including, Computer Misuse Act, Investigatory Powers Act, legislation applicable to CSE, online sexual offences and Online CSE, in relation to digital investigation.

There are five full-time positions available with 36.25 hours required, as well as one part-time position. They are based at GMP’s Vestigo House, Oldham.

Firearms and Explosives Enquiry Officer

£25,758 – £27,690 per annum

The Serious Crime Division of GMP has a vacancy for the role of Firearms and Explosives Licensing Enquiry Officer within the Firearms and Explosives Licensing Unit (FELU).

Duties within this role include:

  • Conducting enquiries, making informed, accountable decisions and recommendations in respect of firearm, shotgun and explosive certificates and licenses.
  • Visiting all applicants in order to ensure compliance with legislation prior to the grant or renewal of firearm/shotgun certificates documenting each visit.
  • Completing land surveys to assess the risks and consequences related to the use of firearms and shotguns on specified land, while taking account of the need to preserve public safety and to safeguard the liability of the Chief Officer of Police.
  • Acting as the point of reference to advise any police officer, member of the public or other agency with regard to the identification of firearms, ammunition or firearms related articles.
  • Advising the public, police and other agencies on firearms and explosives legislation and policy including the Firearms Acts, Home Office Statutory and non-statutory guidance, Violent Crime Reduction Act, Explosives Regulations 2014 and other associated legislation.
  • Conducting enquiries on behalf of the Home Office in respect of Home Office Approved Target Shooting Clubs and Section 5 (prohibited weapon) authorities.

The ideal candidate will have worked in a firearms related environment and have knowledge of firearms handling and the current Firearms Acts and firearm classifications, as well as procedures relating to the licensing of firearms, shotguns, and explosives. They will also have excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to review, analyse and disseminate guidance, circulars and consultation documents, preparing briefing papers accordingly.

This is a full-time role with 36.25 hours required. It is based at GMP’s Nexus House, Tameside, though the Enquiry Officer holds responsibility for a geographical area where they spend the majority of their time, which will either be Trafford and Salford or Bolton and Bury.

Out of Court Disposals Officer

£23,100 – £25,353 per annum

There is an exciting opportunity with the newly created role of Out of Court Disposal (OoCD) Officer, to oversee the delivery of Conditional Cautions and Community Resolutions across the force.

Duties within this role include:

  • Supporting Crime Progression Teams to identify appropriate offences suitable for an Out of Court Disposal at the earliest opportunity, reducing where appropriate the number of resource intensive investigations and prosecution files.
  • Monitoring offences that are suitable, throughout the investigation process, providing advice to officers as required.
  • Managing the delivery of Conditional Cautions and Community Resolutions, ensuring the victim is consulted with their needs at the heart of the process.
  • Ensuring offenders’ needs are assessed and appropriate interventions put in place to reduce the likelihood of future offending.
  • Supporting vulnerable offenders to address their offending triggers while putting rehabilitation at the forefront of offender outcomes.

Candidates must have experience dealing with customer enquiries in a busy service organisation, while demonstrated personal resilience when dealing with difficult customers and working in a busy environment would be advantageous.

They must also have excellent communication skills, be capable of dealing with a diverse range of people, possess the ability to reason with people, be empathetic and remain calm and firm.

This is a full-time role with 36.25 hours required. It is based in the City of Manchester and will cover the Longsight area, with the role moving to GMP’s Central Park Complex in Newton Heath at a date which is yet to be confirmed.
