The Greater Manchester areas with the most Greggs and Costa Coffee chains

It's hard to resist a Greggs with their delicious bakes and sausage rolls. And it can also be a struggle to walk by a Costa Coffee chain without being tempted to nip in for a hot drink.

The region is full of them - with new research finding that Greater Manchester has a total of 100 Costas and 102 Greggs. There are also 28 Caffe Neros, 46 Starbucks, and in comparison, just 11 branches of Pret.

If you're after a hot drink with the most choice of chain coffee shops, then head to the area of City Centre North & Collyhurst in Manchester, as this is where you'll find the biggest concentration of chain coffee shops. The area covers Market Street, the Arndale Centre, and the Northern Quarter.

There are 10 Greggs in the area, one for every 749 people. This means the area ranks second nationally as a Greggs hotspot.

There are six Costas, as well as six Caffe Neros (it’s ranked eight nationally), eight Starbucks (meaning it ranks fourth in the UK), and two Prets.

Based on venues registered with local councils for food hygiene inspections, Costa is the UK’s biggest coffee chain. There were 2,661 Costa outlets as of February.

Greggs was the next most prolific with 2,150 outlets, almost double the 1,104 Starbucks shops across the UK. Caffe Nero, which has 616 venues, and Pret a Manger, which has 402, are less common.

The City of London is probably the easiest place to get a cup of coffee with a Costa, Caffe Nero, Greggs, Pret or Starbucks for every 108 people who live in the area. This is likely because while 10,938 people live in the Square Mile, it’s visited by many more workers and tourists.

The area has 16 Costas, six Greggs, 15 Starbucks, 14 Caffe Neros, and 50 Prets - one in eight of the company’s entire UK’s operation. Unsurprisingly, the City of London is the nation’s Pret capital.

City Centre South in Glasgow is the area best served by Costas, with one for every 664 people who live there. There are six Costas in the area, which contains Glasgow Central Station and St Vincent Street.

The area is also top for Greggs, with six branches of the chain in the area as well. There are also seven Caffe Neros and eight Starbucks.

The country’s hotspot for Caffe Neros is Shaftesbury 1 in Belfast, where there are seven - one for every 399 people. The area covers Great Victoria and Lanyon Place stations, May Street and the Victoria Square shopping centre. It’s also the top hotspot for Starbucks.

Data is based on Food Hygiene ratings data from February, with locations matched to middle super output areas, intermediate zones and super output areas based on their postcode.
