The 'grave' of Dobby from the Harry Potter films has vanished from a Welsh beach

The gravestone for Dobby the House Elf, which marks the final resting spot of one of the heroes of the wizarding world, has vanished.

The 'unofficial' memorial to the famous fictional character has attracted fans from all over the world wishing to pay their final respects at Pembrokeshire's Freshwater West beach.

Hooi-Ling Lim, who lives in the nearby village of Angle and who regularly walks along the sand dunes, realised the tombstone, which was inscribed with the words, "Here lies Dobby, a free elf", was no longer there on Monday, April 8.

No-one seems to know why the stone marker was mysteriously removed, but local resident Laura Ridgway, from the Stackpole Under the Stars campsite, said it had been taken before.

Ms Ridgway said: "When we went looking for it the other week, I am sure it wasn't in the same place as I remember it being a few years back.

"I expect someone will make a replacement if that one doesn't come back."

All that remains at the spot is a small pile of pebbles.

Where is Keeping Faith filmed in Wales?

Dobby was a key character in the Harry Potter films in the struggle against he-who-must-not-be-named and died at the hands of Bellatrix Lestrange after rescuing Harry and friends from Malfoy Manor in the Deathly Hallows film.

In the film, Harry Potter digs Dobby's grave in the gardens of Shell Cottage in a scene shot at the Welsh beach in 2009.

Long after the actors and film crews left, a memorial stone was placed at the exact spot where the elf was buried.

Hundreds of fans of the wizarding series have flocked to the spot over the years, keen to catch a glimpse of where Dobby finally came to rest.
