‘The grass isn’t always greener’: St Mirren tie down key player for next season

St Mirren have secured the services of a key player for another season after tying down Jonah Ayunga on a new deal.

The Buddies confirmed on Monday that the Kenyan international has put pen to paper on a one-year extension, keeping him at the SMiSA Stadium until the summer of 2026.

Ayunga’s previous contract was due to expire at the end of the current campaign, but the forward — one of Stephen Robinson’s first signings as Saints boss — has now committed his future to the Paisley outfit.

The 27-year-old has made 71 appearances since joining the club from Morecambe during the summer of 2022, netting 11 goals — including a vital strike in Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Ross County, a result that confirmed St Mirren’s place in the Scottish Premiership top six for a third consecutive season.

Reflecting on his new deal following the weekend triumph, Ayunga said: "I’m really settled. My family is up here, it’s a good group of boys and I know the grass isn’t always greener.

"I’m happy to be here and that’s three top six finishes on the bounce. I know we can do better and we’ll be looking to kick on again next season.”

Manager Stephen Robinson praised Ayunga’s resilience and impact, especially after returning from a serious knee injury.

“We’re really pleased to get Jonah signed up for another year,” Robinson said. “He's had to be patient this season, but when he has come in he has contributed well and played a big part in the team over the last few months.

“He’s had to battle back from a tough cruciate knee injury and we’re starting to see all the attributes that we know he has. We’re delighted he’ll be part of the group again next season.”
