The good, the bad and the ugly of Manchester United's shirts ahead of the new kit launch

Manchester United have had a number of varied and creative kits across the years. Their latest batch has been leaked on social media and the general consensus from the fanbase is positive ahead of the new season.

Ahead of the official kit launch however there is still time to revel in the nostalgia of the past and take a look my personal best, worst and most memorable United kits across the ages. And just a word of warning I'm only 24 years old so my choices may seem recent and I apologise if I miss any classics.

Favourite Kit

2010/11, a memorable season with a memorable home kit. This is the shirt that Wayne Rooney scored his famous overhead kick against Manchester City in and also the kit in which United won their 19th league title.

A simple design of a red shirt with a white collar may be a little basic to label my favourite kit, but I appreciate the simplicity of it and also the good memories attached to it (the latter I think influences many people's favourite kit). A fitting runner-up is United's 2005/06 away shirt which Ruud van Nistelrooy wore in his final season at Old Trafford.

Worst Kit

The grey kit that United famously swapped at half-time during a 3-1 loss to Southampton would be an easy shout for this given that it is a truly awful kit and also the story attached to it. But I feel like during his time at Old Trafford, Peter Schmeichel wore a selection of goalkeeper shirts which could easily be in consideration.

From 1992-1997 there are a number of kits that could take the crown, but I feel like either his 1995/96 shirt (as pictured below) or his 1994/95 shirts are the worst. I commend the creativity but I think like in Jurassic Park this was a case of they 'were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.'

Most Memorable Kit

As I said before, some people's favourite United kits are the ones to which they attribute the best memories and nothing is more memorable than the shirt in which the club won the treble. The iconic images of Solskjaer, Beckham, Keane and co rampaging to the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League mean everything.

So for that reason I love the special European Umbro red shirt worn that in Barcelona final against Bayern Munich.

For the same reason, you might decide to choose the home shirt worn throughout the rest of that extraordinary season in our United kit survey below. And the fact that the new kits take inspiration from the home and away kits that wore during that campaign is great news for all United fans, whether they will have the good memories to attach to it however is yet to be seen.
