Since Erik ten Hag's appointment, David de Gea's position as the undisputed No.1 at Manchester United has been under scrutiny. The goalkeeper has been criticised for his inability to distribute the ball effectively and also for failing to command his area on a number of occasions and these are two vital traits needed for the Dutchman's system to work.
The issue is that after the departure of Dean Henderson on loan to Nottingham Forest, De Gea has had no competition. And this has been problematic in the first few games as he has shipped two against Brighton and four against Brentford.
He did show some improvement against Liverpool, but it was clear that Ten Hag had told De Gea not to bother even attempting to play out from the back as the Spanish shot-stopper consistently kicked it long. Whether this is sustainable is yet to be seen.

To this end, United have been in the market for another goalkeeper to challenge De Gea. Reports in Germany had linked the club with the likes of Yann Sommer and Kevin Trapp, but it seems both goalkeepers do not want to leave their respective teams for fear they may be stuck as a back-up option.
Therefore, United may need to shop in a lower bracket. The Athletic reported on Wednesday that the club were in talks with Newcastle over a loan move for Martin Dubravka.
Dubravka found his way back into the Newcastle squad when Eddie Howe arrived last season, but this season has been replaced by Nick Pope. Some United fans have reacted badly to the news, believing that United are showing a lack of ambition while others are hopeful that the Slovakian goalkeeper can still challenge De Gea for the No.1 spot.
They made their thoughts known on social media. These are a selection of responses from fans on Twitter:
