The Glasgow trains affected by strike action as ScotRail issues warning

Scotrail have confirmed a revised timetable as strike action will bring trains to halt this week.

On August 18 and 20, 40,000 staff from Network Rail and 14 train operators will take industrial action following a dispute over pay, working conditions and job security.

While ScotRail are not associated with the strikes, signallers from Network Rail play a crucial role in safety and the running of services. Without them, trains cannot run and Glasgow Queen Street and Central will only see a limited amount of services.

ScotRail has warned of significant disruption on the strike days and the days surrounding as signal boxes open at different times of the day. The revised timetable has only 11 routes across the Central Belt, Fife and Borders on the days of strike action and 378 services will operate on August 18 and 20 compared to 189 on 27 July. This is compared to only five routes that ran across the the Central Belt on the last strike.

Services from Glasgow will only be operational between 7.30am and 6.30pm on August 18 and 20. For days surrounding the strikes, disruption is expected. You can see the list of impacted services below.

Services on the following routes will run on these days:

  • Edinburgh Waverley – Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk High: two trains per hour
  • Glasgow Central – Hamilton/Larkhall: two trains per hour
  • Glasgow Central – Lanark: two trains per hour
  • Edinburgh Waverley – Glasgow Central via Shotts: one train per hour
  • Glasgow Queen Street – Larbert: one train per hour
  • Glasgow Queen Street – Falkirk Grahamston: one train per hour
  • Milngavie – Springburn: two trains per hour

If you have a ticket for the days industrial action is taking place, you can still use the ticket for travel the day before, or up to and including Tuesday August 23. ScotRail is urging people who have an Advance ticket, to travel as close as possible to the original day and time of travel as possible.

You can request a fee-free change of journey for all tickets types if the train is cancelled or delayed, or rescheduled from that in the published timetable of the day after you have purchased a ticket.

You also can claim a full refund on unused tickets with no administration fee.

David Simpson, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, said: “It is very unfortunate to see such widespread disruption across the whole of the Great Britain rail network and we know this will be frustrating for ScotRail customers.

“Regrettably, this strike action by RMT members of Network Rail means that we will not be able to operate the vast majority of our services during the period of strike action. Customers should expect significant disruption to services on strike days, as well as the following day.

“We are able to operate on more routes than on the previous day of strike action, however, we are still only able to run a very limited number of services on these routes, so we’re advising customers to seek alternative means of transport and to only travel if they really need to.”

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: "The rail industry and the government need to understand that this dispute will not simply vanish.

"They need to get serious about providing an offer on pay which helps deal with the cost-of-living crisis, job security for our members and provides good conditions at work.

"Recent proposals from Network Rail fell well short on pay and on safety around maintenance work.

“And the train operating companies have not even made us a pay offer in recent negotiations.

"Now Grant Shapps has abandoned his forlorn hopes for the job of Prime Minister, he can now get back to his day job and help sort this mess out.

"We remain open for talks, but we will continue our campaign until we reach a negotiated settlement."
