The Glasgow councillors voters no longer wanted in the city as parties lose seats

A number of councillors who wanted to stand again in Glasgow City Council failed to get re-elected as the Tories and SNP lost seats on Friday.

The Conservative’s Euan Blockley was voted out in the Linn ward as Labour made a gain with newly elected Catherine Vallis. His party colleague Robert Connelly who had also been a councillor since 2017 was knocked out of the running in Calton.

After the result, he said: “It has been an honour and a privilege to represent Calton ward residents over the past five years in Glasgow City Council. Congratulations to the members that were elected to represent the ward for the next five years.”

The party faced a further blow in Pollokshields as David Meikle missed out on returning as an elected member.

Instead the SNP finished with two councillors in the ward. A fourth Tory councillor Ade Abiniu didn’t get enough votes to be re-elected in Victoria Park with the Greens landing a new seat.

Dr Ade Aibinu said on Twitter: “I am incredibly grateful for the privilege to serve the people of Victoria park over the past five years, and my appreciation goes the Glasgow Tories team who have helped me in this campaign.”

Well known SNP politician Mhairi Hunter is no longer a councillor in Southside as Greens made a gain.

Reacting to Friday’s result in Southside Central, Ms Hunter said on Twitter: “Well I didn't expect today to go like this. A combination of Green and Alba votes leaves me no longer a councillor. Pretty ironic really. Still, more time to campaign for independence. Onwards and upwards.”

The SNP’s Mandy Morgan also lost out on remaining a councillor, with Labour winning an additional seat in the North East ward

On social media after the result Ms Morgan said: “Absolutely delighted for Ruairi Kelly on his re-election. We have been a formidable team over the last five years, achieving so much. Sadly it wasn't my day yesterday, but that doesn't mean I'm going anywhere. I will continue to support the local communities.”

Elsewhere - in Shettleston - David Turner - another city politician who was elected in 2017 in Baillieston - didn’t get enough votes to return to the chamber. Labour won two seats in Shettleston.

Labour’s Aileen McKenzie who had represented Springburn, Robroyston, didn’t get elected on Friday when she stood in Langside. Labour’s position in the ward was unaffected however - still holding on to one seat with Stephen Docherty elected.

Ex-councillor Elspeth Kerr, who stood as an Independent but used to represent the SNP, failed to get elected in Drumchapel, Anniesland.

The election count saw the SNP emerge with 37 seats followed by Labour with 36, the Greens with 10 and Conservatives with two.
