The Gavin and Stacey stars you'd forgotten about who helped create some of its best moments

By now, characters like Uncle Bryn and Vanessa Shanessa Jenkins have become household names to viewers who feel like they are an extended part of our own family.

Whether it's Nessa's endless catalogue of past lovers, Pam and Mick's tendencies to dress up as Prince Charles and Camilla, or every flavour of Gwen's infamous omelettes on offer - it's safe to say that since Gavin and Stacey landed on our screens in 2007 we've got to know the ins and outs of these characters rather well.

But as well as the main characters, Gavin and Stacey is made up of a whole host of minor stars that have created some of the TV show's best moments.

Here's a list of our unsung heroes from the show:

Dick Powell

Dick Powell is the man who sells everything around Barry (BBC)

Barry's very own answer to Del Boy, Dick Powell is renowned for selling all manner of things across the Black Market, from sat navs to meat that his brother steals from the slaughterhouse.

The one to call for every last-minute BBQ he has everything on offer including: 'asenna, asenna porc, stecen, sosej and kebabau.' He is also the only resident on the Island who speaks only Welsh and is partial to a cyw iar a selsig Sir Morgannwg (chicken and Glamorgan Sausage) sandwich.

Who plays him? Gwynfor Roberts. The actor has also appeared in Pobol y Cwm as himself and TV series 'A Mind to Kill' as Mr Fenner.

Episode appearances: Series 1, Episode 4 and Series 3, Episode 5

Natalie Lewis

'How's ew Dad? How's ew brother?' (BBC)

Or as Stacey would call her 'a right b****.' Natalie made up one half of that infamous 32 second stare off with Stacey in the middle of the pharmacy after Nessa had a fight with her dad and brother Wayne (who is still on crutches). The stare out is only interrupted when a customer asks 'where to's the fake tans?' even though it's clear she doesn't need any more.

Who plays her? Catrin-Mai Huw who has also appeared as an extra on The Crown and as Gemma in Pobol y Cwm.

Episode appearance: Series 3, Episode 3

Ted

Poor Ted when will he learn that Doris is a player? (BBC)

Poor Ted, rejected by Doris who he's been poking on Facebook and used as a punch bag by Bryn in the midst of his breakdown planning Gwen's surprise party, the hall owner has a rough ride.

Remember Ted, Doris is a player and you two were never exclusive anyway.

Who plays him? Anthony O'Donnell. The actor has also appeared in many films and TV shows over the years including The Crown, Skyfall and Ruth Jones' other hit series Stella as Dai Davies.

Episode appearance: Series 2, Episode 5

Father Chris

Father Chris is not happy with Gavin after he can't think of his favourite sandwich filling (BBC)

Wales' angriest man of god loses his cool when Gavin doesn't know which is his favourite sandwich filling. Clearly, Gavin didn't know that the bread is the holy spirit and the filling is the son. Bl**** cockneys!

Who plays him? William Thomas who has also had small roles in Only Fools and Horses and Doctor Who but is most well known for playing Bryn Cartwright in film Twin Town which is set in Swansea.

Episode appearance: Series 1, Episode 4

Edna Sutcliffe

Pete Sutcliffe's mute mother, doesn't utter a single word throughout the show's first Christmas special but her popping up behind the bar after being there all night makes one of the most memorable moments of the episode.

Pam is, however, less than sympathetic as she rolls up a magazine to defend herself against the old pensioner who is prone to biting her daughter-in-law Dawn.

Who plays her? Actress Edna Doré sadly passed away in 2014 but was made famous for her role as Mo Butcher in EastEnders from 1988 to 1990.

Episode appearance: The Christmas Announcement (2008)

Seth 'The Black Fella'

Dawn and Pete's attempt to spice up their marriage doesn't turn out how they hoped (BBC)

Seth, 'The black fella' as he's referred to in the show, is only on screen for moments but causes a big impact on Dawn and Pete's relationship after turning up to meet them to spice up their marriage and then changing his mind after meeting with them - well the photo of Dawn and Pete was 15 years old.

And the character made for Dawn's infamous 'Seff's gone' screech which is arguably one of the best catch phrases of the series.

Episode appearance: Series 2, Episode 1

Jean

After she promises not to cause a scene Doris sticks her middle finger up to Jean (BBC)

'What the hell is Jean doing here,' you might ask? Yes we never see Jean but she must be a nasty piece of work to get the usually peaceful and placid Gwen all riled up by making an appearance at her barn dance party. And Doris is up to her usual antics after seeing Jean at the barn dance and giving her the middle finger even after promising Bryn that she wouldn't stir the pot.

Episode appearance: Jean is never seen but only spoken about in Series 2, Episode 5.

Owain Hughes

'And before you ask - no I don't' (BBC)

And before you ask, no he doesn't. Owain Hughes works with Gavin at his new office in Cardiff but his appearance is dominated by the perplexing joke that most of us never understood - 'I'm Owain Hughes and before you ask, no I don't.'

Many people have argued that the joke was never supposed to be understood but merely to act as an inside joke that Welsh people kept from the English, others have said that it was supposed to be asked as 'Do you Owe Wayne-Hughes?' Either way the appearance was a brilliant one that we're still talking about years after the episode aired.

Who played him? Steven Meo also starred in the BBC Three series Grown Ups and as Owen in BBC Wales' Belonging.

Episode appearance: Series 3, Episode 1

Scott

Scott is a bit of a pothead (BBC)

Scott appears as Doris's much younger boyfriend on the 2008 Christmas special and is 'a bit of a pothead.'

Scott's been smoking pot since the morning but Doris gives smoking a miss because she did all of that in the sixties. Doris decides to opt for the wine instead and the scene leads to one of the character's best and most classic lines - 'That was 10 0 clock this morning and to tell you the truth Gwen, I'm absolutely 'tw*****'
