The four Welsh pubs named among the UK's best places for a Sunday lunch

Four Welsh pubs have been named among the best places in the UK to tuck into a roast. From Pontypridd to Pembrokeshire, the pubs are well known for their top-level dining and are renowned for their Sunday dinners.

The four Welsh venues named by The Guardian in a 30-strong list are Hare & Hounds in Aberthin, near Cowbridge, The Griffin at Dale, Pembrokeshire, Bunch of Grapes in Pontypridd and The Boat in Erbistock, near Wrexham. All are praised for their innovative menus and homegrown, or nearby-grown, produce.

Sitting alongside entries from London, Scotland, north of England and more, the Welsh pubs boast top quality food as well as beautiful surroundings and cosy interiors. Let's find out a bit more about each.

The Bunch of Grapes in Pontypridd was singled out by the paper for its 'imaginative modern menu, with many a nod to traditional Welsh working-class fare.'

Any regular knows the pub isn't just a pub and restaurant, it also has its own bakery, shop and a well-populated drinks menu of local casks, beers and more. The Guardian goes on to say: "House-made sourdough with fermented seaweed butter, could be followed with pork belly in Welsh cider and smoked paprika jus, and washed down with a local cask ale or a Belgian beer."

About a half-an-hour drive away from the Bunch is another entry on the list, Aberthin's Hare & Hounds , which in 2021 was named Welsh pub of the year, more on that here. Also boasting its own bakery (just a stone's throw away in Cowbridge town centre) you can sample homemade bread, Torgelly lamb and Pembrokeshire oysters. Its entry on the list reads: "The stated aim of this establishment is to showcase its own brand of “regional Welsh cooking”, which it does with aplomb. Running its own bakery, kitchen garden and smallholding, this place reflects well on Wales’s own home county, the Vale of Glamorgan."

Down in Pembrokeshire, you'll find The Griffin in Dale , you couldn't get more of a seaside pub with the favourite right on the water and many drinkers enjoy a pint on the seawall. The Guardian hailed the pub for its seafood choice, which naturally comes from the surrounding waters and the sea wall bar.

A little in from the English border is Erbistock's The Boat which was picked for its love of food and affordability and gorgeous River Dee-side setting. The Guardian writes: "What makes this place special, though – apart from the golden stone, traditional decor and riverside garden – are the affordable Sunday roasts: half a chicken, with all the sides and a yorkshire, [sic] for £15.45, or beef for £16.45."
