Have you heard about the one where the Pittsburgh Steelers trade a bunch of draft capital for quarterback Justin Fields?
We have, too — at a nauseating level.
There are so many layers to scenarios of the former first-round draft pick being traded, and chances are, the Bears might not even do it.
But there’s one glaring reason Fields isn’t a fit for the Steelers — a person, actually. And that’s Mike Tomlin.
The last thing the Heisman Trophy winner needs is a defensive-minded head coach attempting to develop him. Arthur Smith doesn’t have experience grooming young quarterbacks — his background was offensive line and tight ends before he got the offensive coordinator job in Tennessee. Ryan Tannehill had success under Smith, but he was already well into his career.
Pittsburgh has been all about defense since the beginning of time, and that’s how it intends to win. Gritty and physical is its nature. Even with Terry Bradshaw, the Steel Curtain was the star. That’s never changed and it’s not going to now.
As frustrating as it’s been watching offensive-driven teams around the league win playoff games and Super Bowls while the Steelers come up short year after year, they haven’t pivoted.
“The Steelers do not provide what Justin Fields, talented but who needs lots of refinement, needs,” sports media personality Colin Cowherd said on the Feb. 14 The Herd.
“He needs an offensive head coach, a sensibility that is offensive-leaning… You can take a Tesla to a Ford dealer, and maybe they can help briefly, but it’s not their specialty. The Steelers and offense, that’s not what they do.”
Fields needs a team that’s pivoted and is fully dedicated to offense if he’s going to succeed in this league.
And that team, unfortunately, is not the Pittsburgh Steelers.
