Fast food chain McDonald’s has come a long way since it was founded in California in the 1940s by brothers Dick and Mac McDonald.
Having failed in the movie business, the brothers decided to put their talents into running drive-through restaurants. In 1948 they introduced their Speedee Service System selling 15c hamburgers, later adding fries and shakes.
The concept was an immediate success and Dick and Mac decided to begin franchising the concept. They sold 14 franchises, of which 10 became operating restaurants.

The rest, as they say, is history. Last year McDonald’s operated and franchised a whopping 40,031 restaurants globally. From an outlet housed inside a spaceship shaped building in Roswell, New Mexico, to a restaurant in the Museum of Communism in Prague, you’re never far from a Maccy D. There even used to be a branch at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
And you’re never far away from a familiar meal, either. Which is a big part of McDonald’s success. Because wherever you are in the world you’ll find the same value for money and food, whether your must go to menu option is the bestselling Big Mac, a double cheeseburger or chicken nuggets.
But while it seems people can’t enough of McDonald’s it’s important to know how their food hygiene standards stand up to scrutiny. So we’ve taken a look at the McDonald’s across the North East to check their food hygiene ratings as listed on the Food Standards Agency’s website.
In the ratings, five is top of the scale, where standards are very good, and zero is at the bottom, where urgent improvement is necessary.
