The five performances that have defined Matteo Guendouzi's impressive Arsenal career so far

It's been quite the start to the season for Matteo Guendouzi.

After establishing himself in the first team last term, the midfielder has become one of Arsenal's most consistent players in the opening weeks of the Premier League season.

Not only has this led him to becoming one of the first names on the teamsheet, but it's also earned him a call up to the France national team for their upcoming international matches.

It's been quite the rise to stardom for the 20-year-old, but it hasn't been without its ups and downs.

Here's are five of the matches which have set Matteo Guendouzi on the road to stardom.

August 2018 - Man City at home

After arriving from Lorient over the summer, the young midfielder made his Arsenal debut against the Premier League champions Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners went on to lose the game 2-0 with Guendouzi playing the full 90 minutes.

There were certainly easier games to throw the youngster in for, but perhaps a game against Pep Guardiola's side was the perfect baptism of fire for the challenge ahead.

October 2018 - Blackpool at home

It was a game that was tipped to allow the youngster to show what he's about, but things didn't go to plan for the youngster.

Despite getting an assist which saw Arsenal on their way to victory, Guendouzi was sent off for a second bookable offence which placed the Gunners' progress in jeapardy and led him to miss an important Premier League clash with Liverpool.

Speaking of his sending off after the game, Emery said: "He’s playing well, and he’s playing with one thing that is very important, with spirit and competitiveness.

“I don’t know if it’s experience. I think he’s playing with the spirit that I want. Today and in every match. We spoke in the dressing room at half-time that it was very important with control, but I don’t think he lost control in this action.

“He’s playing the way the action is demanding. And the red card is one circumstance in the game.”

That's what was said in public, but it was certainly a lesson that was worth learning for the 19-year-old.

February 2019 Manchester City away

It was a game of few bright spots for Unai Emery's side as they were beaten 3-1, but one player who came away with credit was Matteo Guendouzi.

While others shied away from the challenge, the midfielder put in a typically combative display leading to plaudits from fans and pundits alike.

This was a real 'coming of age' display and showed that the Gunners finally have a player who will show up on a consistent basis.

August 2019 - Newcastle United away

With a season of football under his belt it was time for Matteo Guendouzi to show that he was no one-hit wonder.

He certainly did that in the 1-0 victory during the first game of the season where the Frenchman sat deep, broke up play and teed up Arsenal attacking players to break on the counter attack.

It was exactly the sort of display that was needed on a rainy afternoon on Tyneside, and one which filled fans with hope of what was to come that season.

September 2019 - Tottenham at home

Arguably his best performance so far in the red of Arsenal.

The midfielder was brilliant from start to finish in the North London Derby as he put himself about in midfield and allowed the Gunners to dominate play for large spells.

His pass for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was simply exquisite and showed that he's not only a keen competitor, but a player who really can progress to be an all-round hit for the Gunners.
