The seven Bristol cafés and restaurants which scooped Good Food Award 2020

No matter where you are in Bristol, you can rest assured that you're never too far away from a top-notch café or restaurant.

There's a wealth of quality options everywhere you turn and award ceremonies give us a good idea of where to find the pick of the bunch.

The latest honour to be bestowed upon some of the city's finest establishments comes in the form of the Good Food Awards 2020, with five places in Bristol scooping the award.

The revered awards programme, which was launched in 2002, uses a number of factors including the quality of food served, consistent positive customer feedback and a high hygiene score to determine the winners.

These factors are all reviewed by inspectors before each premises is awarded with a 'Food Score', before 'statistical modelling' is used to select only the most-deserving recipients.

A total of five Bristol cafés and restaurants have earned the honour in 2020, which can all be seen below:

Cafe Matariki

Where: The Brewhouse, George's Square, BS1 6LA

Cafe Matariki serves wholesome food (Cafe Matariki)

Located in Finzels Reach, Café Matariki is a family-run business which uses only the best and most local ingredients possible. It serves breakfast and lunch and caters for all dietary requirements.

Speaking about the award, café manager Janice Heskett said: "We are thrilled to win our Good Food award and would like to thank the unknown customers who nominated us.

"We’ve been a well-kept secret lately - a bit hard to reach while the local building work has affected access but now that’s history and we have all the added excitement of our new neighbours in Finzels Reach."

Burger Theory

Where: St Stephen's Street, BS1 1JX

Burger Theory had been serving patties to the city for years at festivals and at restaurant pop-ups before opening its Baldwin Street site in 2017, and has built up a huge following ever since.

As well as classic beef patties, they have a host of signature patties and five vegetarian burgers on offer, and they sometimes host unlimited burger nights for the ultimate fans too.

Urban Tandoor

Where: Small Street, BS1 1DE

The Small Street curry house is certainly no stranger to such praise, having won nine awards since opening in 2014, while its sister site the Urban Kohinoor in Clifton has won two awards since opening in 2017.

Some of its previous wins include Best Asian Healthy Eating Restaurant and Best Asian Restaurant in the South West, while its head chef Dhanasekaran Durai was named one of the best in the industry in 2018.

Asado

Where: Colston Street, BS1 5BB

Cooking over a wood fired asado grill and using the highest quality, locally-sourced ingredients, Asado brought a new style of burger to Bristol when it opened in 2017.

Its most popular burgers include the El Dorado, which combines oak grilled dry aged organic beef with West Country cheddar, and the Pollo Libre chicken burger.

Poco Tapas

Where: Jamaica Street, BS2 8JP

Bristol foodies love Pocos on Jamaica Street for its fairly-priced tapas, including some the best patatas bravas you will ever taste, and its ethical approach.

There's always a buzzing atmosphere inside and its menu changes in keeping with the seasons, although some classic dishes like saddleback pork belly are available all year round.

Spiny Lobster

Where: Whiteladies Road, BS8 2RS

Spiny Lobster has been in Clifton for 15 years and is known for serving delightfully fresh fish, with a wide-ranging daily menu designed for lovers of seafood.

Its chef cook over open fire which adds a distinct flavour to the food.

St Werburghs City Farm Cafe

Where: Watercress Road, BS2 9YJ

All produce served at the stunning St Werburghs City Farm Cafe is sourced from a stone's throw away.

The cafe is situated in the centre of the city farm which provides meat, vegetables, salad and wild ingredients for the menu. The local allotment holders are also encouraged to trade surplus in return for something to eat or drink.
