The 'fantastic' Swansea City player offering everyone a timely reminder at the perfect time

Wales kick-start their World Cup play-off campaign in exactly two months.

Rob Page's men host Austria at Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday, March 24 with the hope that they will earn the victory required to secure a home contest with either Scotland or Ukraine in the final five days later.

And one man bidding to be involved for the Red Dragons is Ben Cabango.

The central defender has endured a mixed season with Swansea City under Russell Martin - with the head coach regularly playing Ryan Bennett on the right side of his back three.

The coaching staff have long been confident that Cabango would rediscover his best form before going from strength to strength under the current regime.

His two most recent showings offer huge encouragement for the remainder of the campaign.

At Huddersfield Town, Cabango won six aerial duels, more than anyone else on the pitch while he even made one key pass.

The 21-year-old also made the most clearances (5) and the most tackles (3) of any Swans player at The John Smith's Stadium.

Cabango was hugely productive in possession too, ending the match with a passing accuracy of 89.3% - with only Joel Latibeaudiere and Matt Grimes having better totals from those who started the game.

Crucially, he backed that up with another impressive display as Swansea defeated Preston North End to both win and keep a clean sheet for the first time since beating Barnsley at Oakwell on November 24.

Again, his tally of six clearances against the Lilywhites was the most of anyone on the pitch while he had the joint-most tackles and blocked shots. His pass accuracy of 87.5% shows he is successfully adapting from the style played under Steve Cooper for the last two seasons to what is now demanded of him.

"He really wants to be involved and he wants to be playing for his country. It's as simple as that," Russell Martin told the BBC when asked about Cabango.

"I think he's been fantastic. He's the only Welsh speaking player we have.

"Where he's from is very important to him and if he carries on doing what he's doing… as I said, I don't pick the Wales squad, but if he carries on doing what he's doing he's going to be really difficult to leave out.

"The way he's defended his goal in the last two games, he's been fantastic."

There were always going to be ups and downs, both individually - as the Fulham and Nottingham Forest games showed for Cabango - and collectively this season given the major transition of the footballing style under Martin.

But the response of Cabango since the Swans' return to league action in 2022 offers serious hope that he can once again become a vital cog in this setup.

Martin has regularly spoken about the likes of Flynn Downes and Joel Piroe beings assets for the club who - let's not forget - remain in a somewhat precarious position financially due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic combined with the recent expiration of parachute payments.

But still at just 21 years of age, Cabango - who is contracted to the club until 2025 - is one man who has quietly gone about reminding people that he is someone who can be a prominent figure in what Martin and his fellow coaches are bidding to achieve at the Swansea.com Stadium.
