Manchester United facing '£1.5bn bill' to rebuild Old Trafford

The rebuild of Old Trafford would reportedly make Manchester United's home the most expensive stadium in the country.

United moved into their famous surroundings back in 1910 and have called it home ever since. It was last renovated between 2005 and 2006 when 8,000 extra seats were added.

Since this point, people have been calling for the Theatre of Dreams to be modified. Gary Neville recently backed plans for a redevelopment of the ground.

On Instagram he said: "There is a story emerging from Old Trafford that they might rebuild the entire stadium and I have just been asked what I think of it. I actually think that it would be the right move.

"I think by the time that they have spent money on Old Trafford, the existing one, then I think you would be better off building a brand new, better, super stadium. I do think that Manchester United should always be at the forefront of stadiums, have the best facilities and they have fallen behind."

The Manchester Evening News reported on Monday that the club were open to several ideas for the renovation of Old Trafford, including the possibility of completely rebuilding the stadium. Now a report by the Daily Mail suggests that it would cost £1.5billion to renovate the stadium.

This figure is blamed on the cost of steel and essential materials rising sharply, while the conflict in Ukraine is also causing price rises. At this estimate, the Old Trafford bill would cost more than the £1.1billion spent to build the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium - currently the most expensive ground in the country.
