The Exorcist actor Ron Faber dies from lung cancer as fans pay tribute to iconic horror scene

The Exorcist star Ron Faber has passed away after a battle against lung cancer at the age of 90.

The actor's passing was confirmed by longterm friend David Patrick Kelly, who shared the heartbreaking news in an emotional Facebook post.

Ron was perhaps best known for his role as Chuck, the assistant director in the film Crash Course which is featured in the smash hit horror movie that terrified a generation - and many more to come.

But he was also known for his extensive theatre work and off-Broadway performances in the likes of Happy Days at the Cherry Lane Theatre and The Beauty Part and Tunnel Fever at the American Place Theatre, as writes the Mirror.

Ron passed away on March 26, according to fellow actor David Patrick Kelly, who said his friend was "one of the true knights of American avant theatre" who had influenced a number of thespians over the years.

Ron also featured on projects such as Kojak, Law & Order, Hope & faith, The Private Files of J Edgar Hoover and Navy Seals.

In the announcement, David went on to reminisce about first meeting the star, saying: "Ron Faber has passed...first met him when I was a dishwasher/sub-bartender at the Mercer Arts Center.

"He was performing Arrabal's And They Put Handcuffs on the Flowers about political prisoners in fascist Spain for which he won an OBIE.

"We worked together a few years later in a workshop of Rado and Ragni's cartoon musical Tarzan in New York City."

As well as his main role on The Exorcist, Ron also recorded additional demon sounds for the film and previously said he wanted to do voice over work after he"fell in love with the demon" upon his first reading of the script.

His character in the Exorcist became iconic to fans as he was the one to deliver the news that the Crash Course director had been found dead - but no one at the time knew they had actually been murdered by a woman who had been possessed by a demon.

Fans paid tribute to the star on social media with one Twitter user writing: "Scariest film I’ve seen is probably The Shining, although the Exorcist is not far behind. RIP Ron Faber."

Ron is survived by wife Kathleen Moore Faber and his children Hart, Raymond (Sadia), Elise Manuel (Alex) and Anthony.
