'The end of an era': Mancs are 'gutted' at shock closure of much loved bar famous for £3 cocktails

Mancunians have been left 'gutted' following the shock closure of The Font bar, saying it marks 'the end of an era' for the city.

The popular venue, on New Wakefield Street, will close its doors for a final time on Saturday night (January 7) after an impressive 22 years serving its famously cheap and colourful cocktails, from Unicorn Juice to Jelly Tot Sours, complete with candy on top.

Owners said the difficulties from Covid and the ever rising cost of living crisis had taken an 'insurmountable toll' on the business in a sudden heartfelt statement on Friday (December 6).

Olivia Devine posted: "Very fond memories of numerous birthdays spent here! I had my 21st at Font and enjoyed working through the £2 cocktail menu on more nights than I could count, or remember. Always a brilliant place to drink."

The firm previously owned a bar on Wilmslow Road in Fallowfield, which closed back in 2018. Their other venue, on Manchester Road in Chorlton, has confirmed it is remaining open.

In a statement on Facebook on Friday evening (January 6), The Font wrote: "Farewell Font Manchester. With sorrowful hearts we regret to announce The Font Manchester is closing for business. Unfortunately the impact of COVID, followed by the cost of living crisis has taken an insurmountable toll and while this is tough news for sure, we feel comforted by the memories of the last 22 years and the countless awesome times we’ve had here!"
