Fourth Wing fans, I’ve got big news for you — our beloved series is being turned into six graphic novels!! So, yes, that means we’ll get three extra books in The Empyrean. First, the TV show, and now this?? Rebecca Yarros truly is looking after us in compensation for putting us through the emotional turmoil that was the ending of Onyx Storm. You can find books to read next here.
I’ve got so many questions about the graphic novels, like what scenes will they cover? If they don’t do the throne scene, I’m going to scream. Also, who is going to illustrate? We can’t trust just anyone to bring our baby to life. Most importantly, though, will Yarros fill in the plot holes we’ve been asking ourselves?? There are already hints that say yes.
Pour yourselves a cup of tea and get cosy — here’s everything we know about The Empyrean graphic novels so far.

Will there be a Fourth Wing graphic novel?
Yes, there will be a Fourth Wing graphic novel. The author confirmed it on her Instagram on March 12, 2025.
“Hey guys! I’m thrilled to announce the Graphic Novel Adaptation of Fourth Wing!!!,” she wrote. “This is what I’ve been working on between novels, and it’s been such a fun challenge to learn a new format of visual storytelling.”
In fact, if you look closely at the article she screenshotted, The Bookseller hints at “a six-book deal.”
That means the entire Empyrean series is being turned into graphic novels.
Eekkkkkkkkkkkk.

What actually is a graphic novel?
If you’re wondering what a graphic novel actually is, it’s basically a book-length comic. This means that we could get illustrated Violet and Xaden’s sex scenes(!!) and, hey, maybe even a nod towards Tairn and Sgaeyl going at it. Bow chicka, wow wow
You can find an example of a graphic novel below, and yes, of course, I had to show Twilight as an example.
What is the plot of the Fourth Wing graphic novel?
We’ve already been given hints about the plot of the Fourth Wing graphic novel by Yarros, so let’s analyse them, shall we?
“I can’t wait to bring you back to Basgiath in a whole new, even more accessible way,” she wrote on her Instagram.
Did you spot it? Yep, that’s right, Yarros specifically used the word ‘new.’ This leads me to believe that she’s adding new information to the plot of all three books, AKA filling in the holes and setting up for the fourth book. This is also backed up by her hinting at “a new format of visual storytelling” on her Insta.

What plot holes could The Empyrean graphic novels fill?
Here are seven major plot holes that the The Empyrean graphic novels could finally answer.
1. Why did Venin wait hundreds of years to send in a spy? Sure, if they were waiting for the irid, but it’s wild to me that they wouldn’t have tried to overthrow before if it’s so easy to blend in. Especially since this directly contradicts the first two books, where we’re told that they can’t control themselves and turn visually inhuman. Yet, when it suits, Xaden controls himself just fine, and his eyes only flash red occasionally.
2. Are the wards powerful against Venin or not? They seemed to let Panchek, Jack, Xaden and his new brother pass through just fine — even if their power was dampened. The wards are set up as this big Hail Mary, yet if I were Violet and discovered that Venin could function in the wards, I’d certainly be doing something about it.
3. Why didn’t Venin use their signets before? It feels almost like a random thing Yarros has thrown in, as there’s no mention of their powers until Onyx Storm — which some people are dubbing a plot filler.
4. If Lilith was going to force Violet to become a rider this entire time, why didn’t she train her earlier? I understand why she let her pursue her passions as a scribe — but Lilith knows first-hand how deadly Basgaith is, and low-key, Violet wouldn’t have survived without Xaden. Which, as a reminder, was a last-minute fail-safe on her mother’s part.
5. Why didn’t Violet try to get Halden on the rebels’ side? I get that she doesn’t want to bring up Halden (her first love) to Xaden, but the fact that she didn’t try to get the prince to provide aid doesn’t fit into her character. She’s known for her book (scribe) smarts, and this feels like something that she’d at least consider for the greater good. It’s almost like this character was randomly invented.
6. Why did Imogen try to kill Violet in the first book if she knew Brennan? I get that she wanted to get revenge against her mother’s killer, but she wouldn’t have put the entire resistance (that her mother sacrificed herself for) in jeopardy since Brennan is a key figure.
7. If dragons hide their babies so humans don’t discover their powers, why would they let Andarna bond with Violet? The riders obviously notice that she’s getting bigger, and it feels like it goes against everything they stand for to shrug it off. Especially if they’re trying to win a war, surely they would’ve tried harder to exploit her when they put the dots together — which they don’t even do in the books. This theory comes from TikToker Vswede.
Sidenote: I say this all out of love, and I’m obsessed with these books, but it is the fans’ role to point out plot holes that can be fixed. Who else will give it the same love we do?
If you have any other plot holes that you want answered or have answers for the plot holes yourselves, send me an email at emily.sturgess@pedestriangroup.com.au, and I’ll include it. 🙂
Who is publishing The Empyrean graphic novels?
Three powerhouses will be behind The Empyrean graphic novels: Ten Speed Graphics (TSG), Piatkus and Entangled.
I did my research, and do not fret — our graphic novels are in good hands. TSG published Voyaging by George R.R. Martin (AKA A Game of Thrones writer), Piatkus’s founder released Julia Quinn’s Bridgeton series, and Entangled is, of course, the publisher of the book series. Few.
