You can say what you will about the plot of Emily In Paris, but you’ve got to admit, the Netflix drama is a fashion-forward bonanza. Ever since season one, fans have flocked to the show to see what ridiculous outfits Emily (Lily Collins) and the crew of incredibly fashionable characters would wear from day to day and season four is no exception. But it turns out that the fans aren’t the only ones fawning over the clothes — the cast is obsessed too.
This week I was lucky enough to be flown out to Rome by Netflix to have a chat with the Emily In Paris cast and I couldn’t help but ask them about their favourite — and least favourite — looks of the season.
Lead actor and producer Lily Collins admits that this season features a huge tonal shift for Emily.
“Less is more this season,” Lily says of her character’s signature looks.
“She’s pairing it down, she’s tailoring and there’s more of a logic to her choices.”
In an interview with Forbes, costume designer Marylin Fitoussi spoke about this new aesthetic for Emily.
“She’s much more confident and I think this is the most elevated season we have done,” she explained.
For Lily, this new grown-up chapter was represented in some of the key looks this season.
“The Harris Reed black and white ball gown look to me is just so divine and perfect for the theme of the event, as well as for Emily’s transition this season to being more comfortable in black and white and grey,” Lily says.
“Also I really loved a lot of the looks in Italy, the Vivian Westwood polka dots, and the vintage Alaïa, kind of Roman Holiday throwback.”
As for Lily’s least favourite? A cheeky lil’ yellow number.
“I don’t know if I would have ever worn an all-yellow look. And then I look at it on screen, and it’s one of my favourite colours, and it pops so much,” Lily admits.
Another character turning down the fashion drama meter this season is bad bitch agency boss Sylvie Grateux, portrayed by Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu.
“This season, I wanted to be a little quieter,” Philippine explained.
“I wanted to I wanted it to be more about the character, less about the clothes. So I told Marilyn, please, let’s play it a little bit down.”
While Lily and Philippine took the grounded styling route this season, Ashley Park‘s character Mindy went balls to the wall with colour, sparkle and extravagance. But despite the countless gorgeous, dramatic things she wore on set, Ashley’s favourite season four item was a lemon-print suit worn by her co-star Samuel Arnold.
“I’m obsessed with lemon and citrus and I saw this suit and thought ‘I want that’,” she laughed.
Meanwhile, Samuel and Bruno Gourey‘s favourite styling moment from season four was the masquerade ball. Not just because of Emily’s show-stopping look but because of the care costume designer, Marylin Fitoussi put into making the masks represent their characters so well.
“I love the masquerade because she put on a mask for each character and they were all very well chosen by Marylin Fitoussi,” he explained.

Clearly, this show is filled with incredible looks but my favourite is always those worn by Camille Razat‘s character — also named Camille — who embodies trendy, french chic. And it turns out that her on-screen character’s style is heavily influenced by designers Camille is inspired by in her every day life,
“I’m trying to put on the spotlight new, upcoming designers,” she explained.
“So that means a lot of people that just got out of like fashion school, and I put them on the show, and I know it can change their life.”
With all these incredible and impractical looks, the series often receives critiques that no mid-level marketing executive like Emily, or a struggling musician like Mindy, could afford such a brilliant designer wardrobe.
But it’s a critique that Marilyn thinks is a bit silly.
“Many people say to me, ‘Emily cannot afford what she has in her closet.’ And I say, ‘Of course not, nobody can!’ But do you want to see her in a hoodie and jeans? Nobody wants to see that,” she said, per Forbes.
“It’s for the imagination to see these beautiful items created by brilliant people.”
Exactly!!!! Regular people like you and me might be able to churn out a look a few times a year but no one would subscribe to watch that series, now would they?
You can watch Emily In Paris seasons one to four on Netflix.
