The Electric G-Wagon Is Comedy: Video Review

Electric G-Wagen—it almost sounds wrong to say. One of the most staunchly traditional automotive objects entering the new era of EV is something significant, and highly controversial. Not least of which for the G-Wagen’s V-8 and V-12-loving customers. I’m happy to report that the new G580 not only hits the mark as an off-roader. It nails what an electric G-Wagen should be.

EV off-roading isn’t new territory. The Rivian R1T set the standard on its debut, and proved just how well-suited electric powertrains are for hitting the dirt. Mercedes leaned into this for the G580, using four electric motors (one for each wheel) to carefully control traction. It even has a low range for each of the motors to multiply torque for especially tough climbs.

The G580 also has a party trick—One I used several times—called the G Turn. It basically does a stationary spin, like its on a turntable. Mercedes says this is to make especially difficult maneuvers on trails possible, but I found that it wouldn’t engage if the G580 was even slightly tilted. Therefore, I could only conclude that it was for comedic effect.

What was most surprising was how well the G580, even without the G63’s V-8 and attitude, maintained its G-Wagen-ness. It felt spiritually correct, and had undeniable capability. For the full lowdown and the how and why, watch our newest Youtube video above.
