To celebrate her Platinum Jubilee, The Queen has awarded city status to a record-breaking eight towns across the UK and beyond after 38 hopefuls entered the race.
Dunfermline in Scotland, Milton Keynes in England, Bangor in Northern Ireland and Wrexham in Wales have won the title.
In a first, British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies were eligible to apply - with Stanley in the Falklands, and Douglas on the Isle of Man also winning the new title.
Colchester and Doncaster in England finish off the list.
The Platinum Jubilee civic honours competition recognises towns that can display their cultural heritage, royal links, and the strength of their local identity and community.
The competition to receive civic honours was last run ten years ago to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and has taken place in each of the last three jubilee years - with previous winners including Chelmsford, Lisburn and Newport.
Winning city status can provide a boost to local communities and open up new opportunities for people who live there, as is the case with previous winners Perth and Preston.
Research shows that Perth, which was granted city status in 2012 as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, has reaped the full benefits, with the local economy expanding by 12% in the decade since it was granted city status.
But there were 30 other towns who unfortunately were not so lucky.
