The Edinburgh pubs recommended by experts in the new 2023 Good Beer Guide

Several Edinburgh boozers have been named as newcomers in the 2023 edition of CAMRA's Good Beer Guide.

One thing the capital definitely has in abundance is a roaster of impressive pubs for either a quiet one after work, or a weekend session.

Included in this year's industry guide for beer lovers across the UK are several venues in Edinburgh and the Lothians, for newcomers to the area to explore or for residents to try something a little different.

CAMRA books have published a landmark 50th edition of the Good Beer Guide for 2023 and it is packed with some of the best boozers in the UK. The best-selling guide is to reward well-run pubs with an honourable mention, as judges leave their say on what enticed them to visit each establishment.

Among entries were five Edinburgh pubs and several in both Midlothian and East Lothian that left experts impressed enough to include it in the prestigious guide. Below is a list of some new entries and what stood out following their visit.

Black Cat

First up was the Black Cat on Rose Street. Judges commented: "A small, single-room bar, selectively lit and with pleasant, modern styling. An eclectic range of tables, chairs and stools includes half-barrels on the rear wall above an upholstered banquette.

"The two real ales, usually from smaller Scottish breweries, and an extensive range of malt whiskies may be sampled in taster flights. This friendly howff is open until 3am during the festival in August. It is a lively place to visit, especially when folk musicians perform. Children are permitted until 8pm."

Sandy Bell's

Second on the list of recommended boozers in Edinburgh was another central venue in the form of Sandy Bell's on Forrest Road. Judges said: "Sandy Bell's is the premier place for free live folk music in Edinburgh every evening and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Bring along an instrument and join in!

"An arch, the gantry, bar counter and wall panelling are all in dark wood, in marked contrast to the atmosphere which is far from gloomy. In addition to five real ales, there is an impressive range of malt whiskies and gins. Lunchtime pies are excellent. Children are not permitted."

Artisan

Artisan on London Road also impressed judges. (Google maps)

The next new addition to the guide is a boozer in the east of the city. Artisan, on London Road, stood out both externally and internally, as judges commented: "A traditional bar with an ornate exterior which features an eye-catching clock for a hanging sign. Perched at the gable end of a terraced block of colony flats, two entrances lead into a spacious, wood-panelled room dominated by a large island bar and some fine mirrors.

"Very much a locals’ pub, it can be busy when Hibs are at home but normally is more relaxed. Several large screens show football and the jukebox gets regular use. A separate function room is available for bookings. Children are not permitted.

Several other Edinburgh pubs were named in the guide for the first time, along with more in the Lothians. A link to CAMRA's site where you can purchase the full guide is available here.
