The Edinburgh music shop open since 1906 celebrating Record Store Day this weekend

Record Store Day is one day of the year when over 260 independent record shops all over the United Kingdom celebrate their unique culture of music, local artists, stores and of course vinyl.

Underground Solu'shn, situated at 9 Cockburn Street is one of Edinburgh's longest running independent record shops since 1996 with the store dating back to 1906 when it used to be a music shop.

Now, the vinyl shop has been running for 27 years under the new name, 'Underground Solu'shn' and is the last music shop on the road which will be celebrating Record Store Day on Saturday.

Owner of the store, George Macdonald, 50 has been hard at work for the preparations of record store day. He worked at the store on and off from the very beginning and has owned it since 2006.

George said: "We have been running record store day parties for 12 years, since the beginning and we made sure the priority is to give our customers access to exclusive vinyl that comes out on the day."

"Lots of local artists are playing here on record store day and we invite people come and celebrate record shops and vinyl. It really is as simple as that and it is all about getting vinyl to the customer and also helping the shops survive and that's why the independent record shops were set up in the first place."

"On record store day we look to invite local artists and we sell their music in the shop and it is all about the celebration of not just the record store day releases but also all the releases coming out week in, week out, local or around the world."

"All the staff here are involved in the music scene such as musicians, DJ's, promoters, working in radio, lots of people who are our customers are local musicians or run labels and we work with them to support the local scene.

On record store day, the shop will host live sets from local bands including Eyes of Others, Calum Easter, The Countess of Fife and Capricorn One alongside some DJ sets.

George went onto stress the importance of record stores in the modern era and said: "Record stores are very important for the musical community, people discovering themselves through their music, people connecting to different places and musical scenes throughout the world and connecting with grassroots musicians alongside new music being released."

"We have been selling vinyl through the tough times when people stopped making vinyl. Record shops like us who sell all types of music including electronic, dance music keep vinyl alive during the time when the industry dropped the platform for CD."

"We have seen a lot of changes over the years and we probably the only vinyl shops who specialise in DJ vinyl but we also specialise in second-hand records in just every type of music you can think of."

Record Store day is to be celebrated by hundreds of shops across the United Kingdom on April 22, 2023.
