The Duchess of Cambridge channels Mary Poppins at final Buckingham Palace garden party of 2022

The Duchess of Cambridge looked like a real life Disney character yesterday, May 25, as Buckingham Palace hosted the Queen's final Royal garden party of the year within its grounds. Accompanied by her husband, the Duke of Cambridge, Kate looked just like Mary Poppins as she arrived at the event, using an umbrella to shield herself from the typical British weather.

Kate and William were standing in for the Queen at yesterday's occasion, as Her Majesty confirmed earlier this year that she would not be attending any of the Buckingham Palace garden parties this summer, with other members of her family representing her at the events instead. Hiding from the drizzle underneath a delicate-looking parasol, the mum-of-three donned an exquisite pale green dress as she walked around the grounds of Buckingham Palace, making the most of the occasion.

Despite the miserable weather, the Duchess of Cambridge was all smiles as she chatted with guests who had been invited to the garden party. Invitees enjoyed a great day as they wandered around the Palace's gardens, meeting members of the Royal Family and eating afternoon tea-style morsels.

The Queen, 96, has had to pull out of a number of events her presence is traditionally expected at in recent times, due to ongoing mobility problems. Although, Her Majesty has stepped out a few times over the past week to make a number of appearances, including at the opening of the Elizabeth Line and at the Royal Chelsea Flower Show, to which she turned up in a buggy.

Her Majesty was also absent from the first garden party of the season, which took place on May 11, and was the first to be held since the pandemic started. Buckingham Palace officially confirmed earlier this year that Her Majesty is in consultation with her doctors as she is experiencing 'episodic mobility problems'.

It is tradition for The Queen to host three garden parties within the grounds of Buckingham Palace every year, with a fourth and final occasion taking place at Holyrood House in Scotland. The final garden party will take place at the Queen's official residence in Edinburgh on June 29, a few weeks after Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee has been celebrated by the nation.

Each Buckingham Palace party sees the grounds of Her Majesty's London residence totally transformed into a hive of social activity. Covered marquees, tents and red carpets pop up on the lawn, and a Royal Tea Tent is usually set up, which is where The Queen, when she does attend, meets some of her guests.

The first garden party of 2022 saw the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall step in for Her Majesty, with the pair joined by Anne, the Princess Royal. May 18 was the date of the second party, with the Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Edward, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and Princess Alexandra taking on The Queen's role.
