The Diamond closed to traffic for weeks as part of Public Realm Scheme in Enniskillen

The Enniskillen Public Realm Scheme entered its final phase this week, with the Diamond area of the town now closed off to traffic.

Motorists have been asked to seek an alternative route which avoids the town centre while the work is ongoing.

The £5.2million scheme is progressing towards the final phase with the entire project on schedule to complete in spring of this year.

The scheme, which is funded by the Department for Communities and Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, is enhancing the appearance of the town centre with improvements to footpaths, street lighting, landscaping and street furniture.

A statement from the council said it apologised for any disruption caused by the works.

A spokesman added: “Works on the final phase of Enniskillen Public Realm Scheme to the Diamond, which includes the resurfacing of the Diamond carriageway, commenced on January 17, 2022.

“A continuous road closure will be in place on The Diamond Carriageway to facilitate works as part of Enniskillen Public Realm from 07:00 on Monday January 17 to Friday February 11 at 17.00.

“Traffic will be diverted down East Bridge Street/Regal Pass along Wellington Road and up Darling Street. Paget Square will be closed.

“Local Residential access will be maintained to Castle Place. FP McCann will facilitate all deliveries to Townhall Street and High Street/Church Street and access will be available for emergency vehicles at all times.

“The Council and contractor appreciates that this will cause disruption to the town centre, but the contractor will try to alleviate any problems where possible to help the flow of the traffic.

“Fermanagh and Omagh District Council apologises for any inconvenience caused and is grateful to traders and members of the public and in the town centre for their continued support, patience and understanding as the project moves into its final phase.”
