The deadlines if you didn't submit your meter reading before October 1

October saw the new energy price guarantee come into effect meaning people face another rise in their bills. The guarantee caps the typical bill at £2,500 a year, but with gas and electric bills still 95% higher than last winter, experts have warned it is unlikely to prevent more people falling into fuel poverty.

Rising costs have led the government to intervene by offering cost of living payments to vulnerable households, as well as giving all UK homes a £400 discount off their energy bills for the next months starting in October. Read how you'll receive your rebate depending on your energy company here.

While people were advised to submit a meter reading last week ahead of the new October price changes, energy companies reassured customers that they had a bit more time to submit their reading without being subject to the new prices.

How much extra time you have depends on which company you are with - here are all the deadlines for submitting a meter reading to the main energy companies.

British Gas - October 14

The British Gas website said: "The Energy Price Guarantee came into effect on October 1. If you took a reading on September 30 you can submit it here until October 14.

If you provide a read today and your latest bill is due, we'll use this reading to create your bill and we'll let you know once it's ready. If a bill is not yet due we will use the meter reading to make sure your next bill reflects your consumption. Your bill will also reflect any price changes which may happen."

Bulb - October 3

Bulb has the shortest deadline for submitting readings - the company said customers can submit a meter reading until October 3 and that reading will be used for September bills. If customers need to backdate a meter reading they can email it and the date it was taken to hello@bulb.co.uk. Find out how to submit a reading here.

EDF Energy - October 7

Customers with EDF Energy can submit a reading taken on September 30 or October 1 up until Friday, October 7. You can find out how to submit a reading here.
