The Crown: When is the Netflix royal drama returning for season five?

The award-winning Netflix drama The Crown is returning for a fifth instalment - but when will you be able to stream the new series?

The first season was launched back in 2016, when Claire Foy and Matt Smith first took on the roles of a young and newly wed Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in the 1940s and '50s.

The series, which has since seen changes in cast as it has journeyed through the decades, has gone on to win Golden Globes, Emmy awards and BAFTA's.

Olivia Colman took over the reins of Queen Elizabeth II in series three, alongside her on-screen husband Tobias Menzies.

Josh O'Connor joined the cast as Prince Charles, meanwhile Erin Doherty - who is currently starring in BBC psychological thriller Chloe - played his younger sibling Princess Anne.

Here's all the details we have so far on the return of the popular Netflix drama:

When is the next series of The Crown on Netflix?

It has been confirmed by Netflix that The Crown will return in November 2022 - but we don't have a specific date for when it will be available to stream just yet.

There will be a complete change of cast for the fifth season which is likely to pick up in the early 1990s.

The drama usually changes cast every two seasons and there are some brand new faces taking on the roles of the famous royals in the upcoming series.

This means the series three and four cast including; Josh O'Connor, Olivia Colman, Emma Corrin, Helena Bonham Carter, Tobias Menzies and Erin Doherty will not be reprising their roles.

In September 2021, Imelda Staunton - who will be taking over the role of Queen Elizabeth II from her predecessors Olivia Coleman and Claire Foy - was seen in a social media video promoting the fifth season.

In the video message, Imelda sat behind the iconic Queen's desk on the set of The Crown, as she explained they had begun filming the new series.

She explained how she was "delighted" to be taking on the role from "two outstanding actresses" but admitted her stomach "was doing somersaults".
