The Crown rockets to Netflix's most watched list following Queen’s death

Netflix drama The Crown has returned to the most watched list on the streaming platform, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II last week.

Her Majesty, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, passed away peacefully at Balmoral on September 8, aged 96.

Over the weekend, the Netflix series - which follows the reign of Queen Elizabeth II - began experiencing a surge of popularity all around the world.

On Sunday (September 11), The Crown was trending at number three in the UK charts, and number four in the US.

Meanwhile, it stole the number one spot on the Top 10 list of televisions shows in Ukraine, claims data collected by FlixPatrol.

Showrunners for The Crown announced that production on the show’s sixth season had been suspended on Friday (September 9), as a mark of respect for Her Majesty.

A source close to Netflix told Variety: “Filming will also be suspended on the day of Her Majesty The Queen’s funeral.”

And showrunner Peter Morgan described the Emmy-winning drama as a “love letter to her”.

The show was reported to have been a hit with the late sovereign, who was said to have watched the first season after being encouraged to do so by the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

However, friends of King Charles III have criticised the show for “presenting fiction as fact”.

Throughout the show, the role of the Queen has been played by actors Claire Foy, Olivia Colman, and Imelda Staunton.

Colman, who played the Queen for two series on The Crown, paid tribute to her during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

She told Variety: “[The Queen] made a promise as a young woman and she absolutely kept it with such dignity. We’re all incredibly impressed by what she did.”
