The costly West Ham moment Eddie Howe will address with Newcastle United players in training

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe was left to rue the Magpies' costly lapse in concentration at West Ham - not least because his squad worked tirelessly on the threat from set-plays in the build-up to the game.

Craig Dawson's free header from Aaron Cresswell's free-kick was actually West Ham's eighth goal from a dead ball this season and the Hammers are eighth in the table with goals from such scenarios.

Howe's side at least showed fighting spirit but perhaps should have won the game with the amount of chances created before and after Joe Willock's goal.

Howe said after the game: "We're disappointed with the one we conceded because we know all about set-play threat.

"We just didn't defend that situation very well."

The Magpies now face Brentford and will be back in the capital after a trip which forced the squad on to a bus for the journey down to London on Friday night.

Howe said: "It was a late call.

"We were expecting to fly but then the news came through we couldn't land.

"We got the coach it was fine.

"It was a long journey but no problems."
