The cost of my shop rose at just one supermarket this week and it's not who you'd expect

Supermarket prices have been rising rapidly for weeks, leaving households struggling to make ends meet. As the cost of living continues to hit families hard, each week we've been comparing prices of essentials like milk and bread to help shoppers find the cheapest available.

It's been an ever-changing list and last week we reported how Morrisons had been ranked as most expensive of the lot, just three weeks after being declared the cheapest.

The shock result was the clearest sign yet of the price yoyo we're seeing among retailers. Shopping there, as well as at Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Lidl and Sainsbury's, we've been looking at the cost of the same eight items - a two-pint bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, coffee, teabags, butter, beans, chicken breasts and mince.

While this week prices are still high, there has seen somewhat of a plateau, with only one supermarket increasing in price. And it's probably not who you'd expect either - but Aldi has increased the price of its 300g pack of two chicken breasts from £1.99 to £2.09.

It's still the second cheapest price for chicken however, with only Lidl, which takes the cheapest crown for the full shop at £9.91, selling it cheaper at £1.99.

Although it's worth noting that despite Lidl selling its budget beans at 22p, on the occasions we've visited, they've rarely been available, with the next cheapest option selling at 35p. The cheapest bread is also commonly sold out, or running low, not just at Lidl but other supermarkets too.

The overall ranking hasn't changed though. Despite Morrisons reducing the price of its Savers coffee back from 75p for 100g to 70p, its bill is still the highest of the lot - at £10.81 for the basket of eight items.

It's largely Morrisons' high meat costs that have put it in the bottom spot - with chicken now at £2.49 for a 300g pack and mince up to £2.19. Those prices are higher than any of the other supermarkets and the mince is 50p more expensive than the cheapest, which is Asda's new Just Essentials pack for £1.69.

After Lidl, Tesco and Sainsbury's all put the cost of 2 pints of milk up last week, you now can't get it for less than £1.05 from any of the six supermarkets. Most are also selling four-pint bottles for £1.35 and six-pint bottles for a staggering £1.99.

The only slight difference in sizes found in our shopping was with the baked beans, which range from 400g in Sainsbury's and 410g in Asda and Morrisons, to the standard 420g in Aldi, Lidl and Tesco. And where Asda's pack of chicken is larger, we've worked out the equivalent price for a fairer comparison.
