The Colts want to interview the Jaguars’ Jim Bob Cooter

The Indianapolis Colts finally landed on a new head coach, hiring former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen after a lengthy search. The next step for the Colts is filling out the coaching staff and Jim Bob Cooter appears to be at the top of their list.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Colts requested to interview Cooter for their vacant offensive coordinator role. As it’d be a promotion from Cooter’s current position as the Jaguars’ passing game coordinator, Jacksonville cannot deny the request.

Cooter, 38, has been a relatively popular name among teams hunting for an offensive coordinator with the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers both interviewing him in the last few weeks.

The former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator joined the Jaguars in February 2022. In his first season with the team, quarterback Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville passing offense made massive strides and finished 10th in passing yards, 14th in passing touchdowns, and had the third fewest interceptions.

Indianapolis finished the 2022 season with the third fewest points scored and rotated between Matt Ryan, Sam Ehlinger, and Nick Foles at quarterback. Colts owner Jim Irsay has made it clear that the team intends to find a young quarterback — perhaps Alabama’s Bryce Young — to take over.
