The Co-op issues urgent recall for dairy product that may be 'unsafe to eat'

Supermarket chain The Co-op has urged shoppers to check their fridge for a popular dairy product that is being recalled over fears that it may be unsafe to eat.

The grocer has issued an urgent recall for their Co-op Irresistible Lemon Curd Yogurt (150g) due to incorrect packaging and an undeclared ingredient that may cause harm.

A recent post from The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has alerted shoppers that the yoghurt pot contains egg, which has not been declared on the ingredients. A packaging error led to the lemon curd yoghurt to be packed in a Toffee Yogurt pot with a Lemon Curd lid.

This means that the product is not suitable to eat for anyone who has an allergy or intolerance to egg. The product affected will have a use by date of September 14.

The FSA wrote on their website: "Co-op is recalling Co-op Irresistible Lemon Curd Yogurt because it contains egg which is not mentioned on the label.

"As a result of a packaging error, it has been incorrectly packed in a Toffee Yogurt pot with a Lemon Curd lid. This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to egg."

Shoppers have since been warned not to eat the product and to return it to their nearest branch where they will be provided with a full refund.

Co-op has said that they "apologise for any inconvenience caused" and have contacted the relevant allergy support organisations to tell their members about the recall. Point of sale notices have also been placed in stores that will explain to customers what product has been recalled and what they should do if they have purchased the product.

Co-op customers can contact the customer careline by calling 0800 0686 727, or by emailing customer.careline@coop.co.uk.
