The city centre block where residents fear burglars will 'break into flats'

People living in a city centre apartment block fear thieves could soon 'break into flats' after enduring parcel thefts on a 'practically daily' basis.

Police have confirmed that ‘an investigation is still being conducted' after reports of a burglary in Jefferson Place on Sunday (February 12). Photos show that burglars gained entry to the building’s post-room and vandalised pigeon holes.

It’s understood that new security measures have been put in place by the building’s managers, Living City. However, residents fear that their homes could be targeted next.

“How long is it until they get from the post room to breaking into flats?” asked one resident who spoke to the MEN. The man, who asked not to be named, has lived in Jefferson Place for four years.

“It’s daily, practically,” he continued. “That’s the only time they have pried open the letter boxes. Normally they just pick up parcels and check them by peering inside the corner. They tend to go for clothes a lot.”

The February 12 incident came ‘a couple of days after’ new posters were put up saying ‘we are going to change the code and post [the new one] to letter boxes’, he added. The resident also has ‘sympathy for Living City’.

He went on: “They have reported it to the police and explored other security issues but I will believe it when I see it. I am sympathetic. On the other hand, it’s the couriers fault because they should not leave them there, there’s clear signage.

“A parcel locker would be great. We have suggested it before and they decided it’s unfeasible.”

The latest parcel thefts were highlighted by the chair of the Britton House Cladding Action Group, on Twitter.

A GMP spokesperson said: “[We] can confirm an investigation is still being conducted into this regarding a burglary. No arrests made at this time.”

Living City has been contacted for comment.
