'The chosen one' - Liverpool fans have theory on next manager after Jurgen Klopp

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso continues to impress as Bayer Leverkusen manager after booking a place in the Europa League semi-final.

The triumph over Union Saint-Gilloise extended their unbeaten run to 12 as the Spaniard enters the final games of his first season in charge at the BayArena. He was installed in the post, leaving his role at Real Sociedad B, following Gerardo Seoane's sacking.

He will meet Jose Mourinho in the last four, a manager he played under at Real Madrid, after his AS Roma side booked their place in the semi-final to continue their impressive run in Europe after winning the UEFA Europa Conference League last season.

Alonso is still fondly remembered on Merseyside for his exploits at Anfield where he won the Champions League with the Reds, scoring in the final, and establishing a formidable midfield partnership with Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

With the likes of Gerrard and former Reds who endured success with the club, there are always murmurs of taking charge at the helm in L4 - with the former Rangers and Aston Villa still among those near the top of the betting market for a position in the dugout after Jurgen Klopp's reign.

Following the positive run in the Bundesliga with Die Werkself, Alonso is coining an impression for his managerial abilities and his run in the Europa League has piqued the interest of Reds fans.
