The cheapest supermarket to buy butter as Lurpak climbs to £9.35 a tub

We all know that prices are going up and some are certainly rising more than others.

If you spend any time on social media at all, you'll have seen the posts about just how much shops are charging for butter - Lurpak in particular.

500g tubs of the stuff have been selling for an eye-watering £5 and shoppers have been stunned after seeing the price of 1kg top £9 for the first time.

Sharing a photo of the product with a £9.35 price tag on Facebook, customer Polly Whiter said: "So if you’re on minimum wage you have to work an hour to be able to afford some Lurpak. What a joke this country is."

And her comment clearly struck a chord with fellow shoppers as her post received thousands of comments and shares from people stunned by the price.

But many suggested buying something else rather than paying the 'silly price' and there are some much cheaper options out there.

Our weekly price comparison has been tracking the cost of butter and other basics such as milk and bread in six supermarkets since March.

Back then both Asda and Lidl were selling it cheapest at £1.45 a block. As prices started creeping higher, it was Asda that remained cheapest for a number of weeks until its Smart Price range was axed in favour of its new Just Essentials, which includes a soft spread but no butter.

Since then prices have been rising across the board, but there is still one shop where it's just about cheaper than others.

Lidl is cheapest at £1.72 a block (Manchester Family / MEN)

At Asda, Aldi, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons, a 250g block of salted butter now costs £1.75. Lidl is selling the same size block for £1.72.

Whether they're all the same in quality is for you to judge, but four blocks of Lidl's cheapest would set up back £6.88, that's £2.47 cheaper than the 1kg Lurpak.

Have you changed brands because of rising food costs? Would you pay more than £9 for a 1kg tub of butter? Let us know your views in the comments here.
