The cheapest petrol prices near me: We checked Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury's as prices rise every day this month

As petrol hits new record prices, we have been out in Cardiff to find the cheapest prices on offer for motorists. The RAC has said that new records in the average price of petrol have been set every day for the last month.

The cost to fill a family car now stands at about £103 for petrol, and £106 for diesel, it said. The average petrol price is now 186.59p per litre, with diesel at 192.48p.

The war in Ukraine and moves to reduce dependence on Russian oil have helped drive up fuel prices, putting households under pressure as food and energy bills also soar.

WalesOnline went out in north Cardiff on Wednedsday, June 15, to find out what supermarkets in the area are charging.

The cheapest we found was Tesco at Western Avenue where petrol was on sale at 178.9p per litre and diesel was 187.9p, while at the Sainsbury's four miles away in Thornhill was 183.9p for petrol and 190.9p for diesel.

This was also compared to Asda at Coryton where petrol was 180.7p per litre and diesel was 188.7p, and Morrisons at Llanishen was 181.7p and diesel was 189.7.

The RAC has called on the government to cut fuel taxes to ease the cost burden on motorists, and to help lower the cost of living.

Spokesman Simon Williams said: "New records in the average price of petrol have been set every day for the last month, with a litre rising 21p, which has added more than £11 to a tank.

He said that RAC analysis of wholesale diesel prices indicates that diesel could hit "a previously unthinkable average of £2 a litre", and that "unfortunately, it has already crossed this threshold at motorway services".

Luke Bosdet, the AA's spokesman on fuel prices, says: "Another penny on petrol is a surprise given that wholesale costs have been level if not lower since the Jubilee."

He said if petrol continues to go up at the same rate heading into the weekend, "the government has yet another reason to call the retailers out".

A spokeswoman for Sainsbury's said: "We price locally and always aim to be competitive."
