In a region as big as Greater Manchester, it can be difficult to know which are the best areas to buy a home. For house hunters wanting to purchase their next properties in the region, looking at house prices is usually a good place to start.
House prices are great indicators of where you are most likely to find a bargain, and the most expensive areas which are often the property hotspots where demand - and incomes - are greatest. Over the last year Greater Manchester had an overall average price of £240,000, but the cost of a home varies hugely from one borough to the next.
Using Rightmove's latest house price index, we've looked at property prices in each of the region's 10 boroughs and found the cheapest and dearest areas to purchase a home within them.

Bolton
Homes across Bolton sold for an average price of £198,345 over the last year, making it one of the region's more affordable boroughs to buy a home.
The majority of sales were terraced properties, selling for around £139,783. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £198,212, with detached properties fetching £371,952.
For house hunters looking for a bargain, the area with the cheapest property prices is the town of Farnworth, where homes sell for around £151,146.
On the opposite end of the scale, the most expensive part of Bolton is Westhoughton, where you can expect to buy a property for around £214,382.
Bury
Over the last year house prices in Bury were around £233,760 on average, rising by 2 per cent on the previous year.
The most popular type of property that sold in the borough was terraced homes, with an average house price of £174,102. You can typically buy a semi-detached home for £237,174, whereas a detached house would cost you around £374,638.
Prestwich is the most expensive part of Bury, where the average price of a home is £ 290,206. At the more affordable end of Bury's property market, the cheapest area is Radcliffe, with an average house price of £ 187,889.
Manchester
In Manchester, properties had an overall average price of £247,859 over the last year, with the majority of sales being semi-detached properties selling for an average price of £281,721.
Sold prices across the borough are similar to the previous year, but are 20 per cent up on the 2019 peak of £206,246.
The hotspot area of Manchester where house prices are the highest is Didsbury, with an average house price of £393,248.
Those looking to buy a home for a more affordable price would have the best luck in Harpurhey, where properties are typically priced around £127,688.
Oldham
As one of the region's cheaper boroughs to buy a property, Oldham has an average house price of £179,761, an increase of 1 per cent since last year.
The majority of sales in Oldham during the last year involved terraced properties, selling for an average price of £135,723. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £199,460, with detached properties fetching £310,462.
The most affordable area to buy a house is Hollinwood, where you can snap up a property for an average price of £153,081.
At the other end of the market, Saddleworth is the most expensive area, with homes priced around £282,176 on average.
Rochdale
Properties in Rochdale had an overall average price of £188,776 over the last year, with the most popular type of sale being terraced property, going for an average price of £132,732.
Overall, sold prices in Rochdale over the last year were similar to the previous year and 17 per cent up on the 2019 peak of £161,019.
The most expensive part of the borough is Bamford, with an average house price of £281,854. Those looking for a cheaper price can get the best value in Castleton, where properties are priced around £145,574.
Salford
Over the last year house prices in the Salford borough were priced at an average of £235,029, increasing by 18 per cent since the peak of £199,069 in 2019.
The majority of sales in Salford are semi-detached properties with an average house price of £248,808. Flats sold for an average of £196,800, with terraced properties priced at around £199,664.
The cheapest area to buy a home in the borough is Little Hulton, where you can bag a property for around £161,784. The most expensive, hotspot area is Boothstown where hom es are priced at £289,936 on average.
Stockport
Stockport is one of Greater Manchester's more expensive boroughs with an overall average price of £304,118 over the last year.
The majority of sales in Stockport during the last year were semi-detached properties, selling for an average price of £311,218. Terraced properties sold for an average of £226,935, with detached properties fetching £513,153.
Overall, sold prices in Stockport were similar to the previous year and 18 per cent up on the 2019 peak of £257,773.
Bramhall is the most expensive part of the borough, with houses going for around £479,457 on average. On the other hand, Reddish is the cheapest area with an average house price of £199,363.
Tameside
Properties in Tameside had an overall average price of £198,880 over the last year with prices up by 3 per cent on the previous year.
Terraced homes are the most popular property type in the borough, selling for an average price of £163,740. You can typically buy a semi-detached property for an average of £218,985 with detached properties priced around £336,581.
House hunters looking for a bargain in Tameside would have the best luck in Ashton-under-Lyne, which has an average house price of £174,805.
The most expensive part of the borough is Broadbottom, with houses selling for around £299,792 on average.
Trafford
Trafford is Greater Manchester's priciest borough to buy a home, with an overall average price of £393,112 over the last year.
House prices in Trafford have gone up by 6 per cent since last year and are 25 per cent up on the peak of £313,470 in 2019.
The majority of sales in Trafford during the last year were semi-detached properties, selling for an average price of £393,872. Terraced properties sold for an average of £316,293, with flats fetching £244,202.
The most expensive part of the borough - and Greater Manchester - to buy a home is Bowdon, where homes sell for an eye-watering £880,962 on average.
Those looking for a cheaper price should try Partington, which is the cheapest area in Trafford, with an average house price of £196,812.
Wigan
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Wigan is the most affordable borough to buy a home with an overall average price of £167,209 over the last year.
The majority of sales in Wigan during the last year were semi-detached properties, selling for an average price of £169,101.
You can buy terraced properties here for an average of £126,385 and detached properties for around £290,913.
The cheapest part of the borough is Pemberton, with a cheap average house price of just £127,931. Standish is the most expensive area, where homes are priced around £241,702.
