The Chase viewers shocked as player takes minus £8k offer in the head-to-head round

It was another exciting episode of The Chase this week, as the ITV hit show presenter Bradley Walsh welcomed contestants Gary, Damon, Sarah and Emma to take on Jenny 'The Vixen' Ryan in a series of general knowledge questions.

Many viewers took to social media to express their opinion on Tuesday's episode, which saw the contestants nearly bag a whopping £34k cash prize. The game show started off on a high when Gary was the first to test his knowledge against The Vixen.

The corporate manager from London said that he "loved" quizzes and even appeared on Bradley's previous game show, Cash Trapped, although the TV host awkwardly admitted that he didn't remember him. 'Gameshow Gary' managed to bank a comfortable £7,000 in the Cash Builder, but ambitiously aimed for the £30,000 in the Head-to-Head round.

He managed to answer all questions correctly, including Baywatch as the 2017 film the newspaper, The Guardian, described as the "alpha-male chest-off is not worth the Hasselhoff", and the brain as part of the body that has a small lobe known as the flocculus.

The final question of the round asked: 'What type of bird is the emblem for the British fashion brand, Jack Wills?' A confident Gary told Bradley that he had in fact turned up to the gameshow studio with a Jack Wills jacket and knew the answer was pheasant. The London contestant proudly came back to the table with an impressive £30k.

Next up was Damon, who wanted to use the money to take his wife on holiday to the Highlands for her birthday. The handyman from Warrington had a great run-in and managed to bag £8,000 in the Cash Builder round. Playing it safe however, Damon opted for the £8k in the Head-to-Head round, which Bradley agreed was a wise choice.

In one of the questions, Damon guessed incorrectly that the closest mountain to the Equator was Everest, when the answer was Kilimanjaro. But he managed to bank the £8k, which brought the team's prize fund to £38k, with a question about an 80s film. The question asked: 'In the '80s film, 'War Games', nuclear war is averted after a computer is ordered to play what game against itself?' Damon answered correctly with Tic-tac-toe.

Sarah from Yorkshire wanted to use her share of the money to travel to Washington D.C. She managed to get £4,000 and decided to get what she had earned later on in the Head-to-Head round. Although off to a shaky start, Sarah guessed correctly that Fluffy Duck was an Advocaat-based cocktail, which The Vixen guessed incorrectly as Fluffy Dice.

Sarah also managed to guess the answer for the following question: 'What is another name for the short Eton jacket?' as bumfreezer. With Sarah's correct answer, the team was now at £42k.

But things quickly changed, when a nervous Emma - the final contestant, admitted that she wasn't too sure if she would make it a full house. The heavy metal music lover wanted to use the cash prize to pay off her student fees. During the Cash Builder round, the Isle of Wight student bagged £2,000. Despite her teammates encouragement to go for the £2k in the Head-to-Head round, Emma surprisingly went for the minus £8,000 offer, which The Vixen described as a "very wise decision".

The Chase fans took to social media to share their thoughts on the decision. Twitter user, thatlisalady, said: "Sorry but no matter how much money those people got I would never take the minus."

Twitter user, Gary, added: "Never ever take a minus offer always go high so you don’t get murdered on social media". Another Twitter user called, Penny, said: People taking the minus offer on [The Chase] fills me with anger A) You don't go on a show to win money to not win the money B) You're taking away what someone else has worked for".

But Emma found her feet in the Head-to-Head round, and managed to answer various questions correctly, including: 'What is the first song to be sung by a character in the Disney film 'The Lion King'?, which was I Just Can't Wait to be King. Emma reached the minus £8k, which meant that the team prize fund decreased to £34k.

In the Final Chase, the contestants were faced with tough questions. Even with a full house, the four managed to get 15 questions correctly. Unfortunately, The Vixen managed to get all 15 answers with 27 seconds to spare.
