The Chase’s Paul Sinha slams BAFTA broadcast snub of ITV show win as ‘snobbery’

The Chase’s Paul Sinha has criticised the decision not to air the popular ITV quiz show’s BAFTA TV win on Sunday, after their triumphant moment was cut from the broadcast on BBC One.

The Sinnerman attended the awards ceremony on Sunday alongside fellow Chasers Anne Hegerty, Jenny Ryan and Mark Labbett and clinched the BAFTA award for the Best Daytime show

But the moment The Chase, which is one of the most popular shows on British TV, scooped the coveted award was not aired in the two-hour broadcast, which saw a number of awards during the proceedings cut in order to slim down the runtime.

Chaser Paul was not pleased when he discovered the cast and crew’s acceptance speech had not been televised, but was instead relegated to a video montage.

The former GP tweeted last night: “It looks like we may have been cut from the main show but just to say - The Chase won a Bafta today.

He followed up the tweet with a snap of himself and Jenny Ryan holding up their coveted golden BAFTA face awards.

Paul then again addressed the snub on Monday, writing on Twitter : “The day after, and it stings a little to be excluded from the main BAFTA show.

“I realise that a certain anti daytime snobbery will always exist, but a cursory glance at viewing figures will show how well many shows are holding up, against more prestigious productions.”

Furious fans agreed with Paul, as one replied: “It was utterly ridiculous to exclude some awards while wasting time on the interviews.”

Another said: “I missed the BAFTAs last night & was going to watch catch-up .. don’t think I’ll bother now that I’m discovering that the bits I really wanted to see have been squeezed into a corner or completely left out !!”

Comedian and actor Richard Ayoade played BAFTAs host for the third year running on Sunday evening, with George Ezra performing live on the red carpet.

A plethora of famous faces were on hand to hand out the awards, including the likes of Olivia Colman, Tom Daley and the Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa, who has been named as Jodie Whittaker’s successor in Doctor Who.

Martin Freeman, Lee Mack, Katie Piper, Ross Kemp and Rochelle Humes also presented awards on the night.

Channel 4 drama It’s A Sin, about a group of friends during the 1980s Aids crisis, led the nominations going into the night, up for 11 gongs, including Best Drama and Best Mini-Series - but the hit show was ultimately snubbed in every category.

There were major wins for stars including Sean Bean and Jodie Comer, who managed to bag a gleaming gong tonight, as well as Big Zuu who took home two golden faces, alongside many others who claimed their coveted awards.
