The Chase: Contestants win £45,000 after a tense contest against chaser Shaun Wallace

The Chase's Bradley Walsh welcomed contestants Matt, Julia, Ryan and Margo on Thursday's episode of the ITV hit show. The contestants were testing their wits against chaser, Shaun 'The Dark Destroyer' Wallace.

First up was travel advisor, Matt, from Leicestershire. He wanted to use the cash prize to travel South America and managed to bank £4,000 in the first round.

Despite admitting that the high offer of £20,000 was "really really tempting" in the head-to-head round, Matt opted for the £4k. In the first question, he confidently guessed that The Mummy was the subject in the 2017 Tom Cruise monster film. Despite host Bradley Walsh's doubts, his answer was correct.

The second question asked: "Excluding the UK, how many commonwealth countries are there?" Matt guessed it was 37 as there were a lot of "small countries, which Bradley agreed. In response, the host said: "You've got Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, [Canada], Australia. I think you're right, you've got a lot more than four." However, both of them were incorrect and the answer was 51, which the chaser guessed correctly.

Later on, Matt was asked: "Which former Prime Minister wrote the book 'New Britain - My Vision of a Young Country'?" The contestant from Leicestershire guessed correctly that it was Tony Blair, but the chaser did not and went for Gordon Brown. Another question asked: "What European unit of currency is equal to 100 fillers?" Matt guessed it was Kuna, but the correct answer was Forint as the chaser guessed. The chaser told the contestant he should've known the answer due to his background in travelling.

Matt felt fairly confident in the next question however, as he guessed correctly that the first name of The Simpsons' creator Matt Groening's father was Homer. He managed to bag the £4,000 with a question about Scottish words. The question asked: "'Betrump' is an old Scottish word meaning to do what?". The contestant went for the word cheat over bleat and tweet, and successfully brought home the £4,000 to the team's cash prize fund.

Next up was Julia, who wanted to use the money for a car upgrade. She managed to bank an impressive £6k in the cash builder round. Feeling rather confident, Julia then opted for the £36,000 in the head-to-head round. Julia breezed through the round and managed to answer all the questions in the second round correctly. The first question asked: "Which of these members of Destiny's Child has not had a UK number one hit single away from the group?" Julia guessed correctly that it was Michelle Williams over Beyonce Knowles and Kelly Rowlands.

With a brave guess, Julia went for Cyd Charisse as the entertainer who did not perform in outfits made out of fruit. Much to Julia and Bradley's delight, the answer was correct and the contestant brought back home a whopping £36k, which resulted £40k in the cash prize fund.

The third contestant was young fishmonger, Ryan, from Gillingham in Kent. The contestant, who loved food, wanted to use the money to help out with his food blog. After a promising cash builder round, Ryan decided to stick with his sensible £5k in the head-to-head round.

Although he started off strongly, he slipped up in the third question of the round, which asked: "What island is the only destination that still receives its mail from an official Royal Mail ship?" The contestant guessed it was St Lucia when in fact it was St Helena. He then got the following question incorrect, which asked: "Before being hanged, which American is quoted as saying: "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country!" " The contestant guessed the answer was Paul Revere, but the answer was in fact Nathan Hale, which the chaser correctly guessed.

The young fishmonger managed to bank the £5,000 to the cash prize fund when he took a wild guess on a question about which act charted first in the UK. Ryan chose Paper Lace over Scissor Sisters and Rock Steady Crew, which he guessed correctly. Jumping for joy, Ryan was more than pleased that the team's cash prize fund was now at £45,000

The last piece to the puzzle was Margo from Fife. She wanted to use the cash prize to go travelling to New Zealand with her husband, Gordon.

Although the contestant failed to answer two Scottish questions, she banked £2,000 and decided to stick with the same amount in the head-to-head round. However, the game was all over for Margo when she guessed incorrectly that Peter Jackson was the director that made $2 billion from their films, when the answer was in fact Titanic and Avatar director James Cameron.

In the Final Chase, the trio made an impressive performance and managed to get 20 questions correctly. The Destroyer admitted that he had his "work cut out" with the team and knew it would be a close call.

It was a close contest with The Dark Destroyer failing to answer which J K Rowling character married Ginny Weasley. The team answered that it was Harry Potter. After seven attempts to push back, The Dark Destroyer ran out of time to answer all 20 questions, leaving the trio victorious and each £15,000 richer.
