The musical version of Roald Dahl classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is heading to the Palace theatre. The production will arrive in the city for a near month-long stay in July next year.
Those keen to get hold of priority tickets can sign up here, with the first lot of tickets going on sale at 10am on July 7, with general admission tickets then going on sale at 10am on July 8. As with the classic children’s book, the music tells the story of young Charlie Bucket.
Charlie, with a group of variously ungrateful, mean, self-obsessed and greedy children, win a contest to enter the secretive world of chocolate maker Willy Wonka and his wondrous chocolate factory. But all is not as it seems, and soon Charlie learns that there are greater plans in store for him.
The story was famously made into a movie starring Gene Wilder as Wonka in 1971, directed by Mel Stuart, though Dahl himself was never a fan of it. Director Tim Burton then remade it in 2005, with Johnny Depp playing Willy Wonka.
A prequel, called Wonka, is also currently in production with Timothee Chalamet playing the young chocolatier, directed by Paddington helmsman Paul King and starring Keegan-Michael Key, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Olivia Colman, and Jim Carter. It’s due for release in 2023.
The musical version, meanwhile, arrived in the West End in 2013, originally directed by Sam Mendes, and running for nearly four years and winning two Olivier awards, though reviews were a mixed bag.
The Manchester production will run from July 4 to July 30, 2023.
