Pictures from over the last 20 years show changes in Nottingham shopping street

In its heyday, Clumber Street was once branded Europe's busiest shopping street. At the weekends, it still throngs with shoppers.

But as these pictures show, things have changed dramatically - as Lillywhites sports shop is no longer there or clothing shop etam. But some stalwarts of Clumber Street remain - like superdrug and McDonald's.

In March, huge queues formed when JD Sports outlined its Wellgosh store, on Clumber Street, would be closing. Wellgosh started out as an independent clothes shop in Leicester but was bought by JD Sports in January 2021. The company confirmed it would be closing in a statement on Tuesday, February 28.

A survey in the 1980s described the Nottingham street as the busiest pedestrian thoroughfare in Europe. London's Oxford Street is now widely known as Europe's busiest shopping street, beating Madrid's Gran Via by almost 12,000 visitors a day.

Like many high streets, businesses have come and gone on the street over the years. Popular camera shop Jessops is one example. The street once had "three pubs", and more independent stores, and shops like Birdcage, Plain Clothes and Paraphernalia.
