The Celtic Europe key factor behind Brendan Rodgers return as Champions League plan mapped out

Brendan Rodgers is on the brink of a sensational Celtic return after in-depth chats with Dermot Desmond including making a mark in Europe, according to a report.

The former Liverpool and Leicester City boss, who departed the club four years ago, is on the verge of becoming Ange Postecoglou's successor after a big push from the Scottish champions to get the 50-year-old back in the door.

Chief executive Michael Nicholson was joined by finance director Chris McKay in Mallorca last weekend for face-to-face talks after making the trip by private jet to discuss a potential return with the No1 managerial target. Club supremo Desmond also made personal phone calls to the Northern Irishman in a bid to talk him out of his plans for a year long break.

The Daily Mail now report Rodgers has sold the Hoops on a plan to re-establish the club as a competitive side in Europe with the board said to be ready to invest in the players and infrastructure necessary to make it happen.

Champions League football is returning to Parkhead this season with the champions directly qualified for the group stage for the second successive campaign due to their Scottish Premiership title success.

The same report states Rodgers has now began speaking to potential members of his backroom team while attempts to persuade John Kennedy to remain in Glasgow are also on the go.

Celtic are on the hunt for a new manager after Postecoglou departed following two successful seasons for a crack at the English Premier League with Tottenham.

Rodgers is said to have had interest from Leeds United and other clubs - but a return to the club that he won seven trophies during his first stint holds greater appeal says the same report.
