The Catch location: Where was the Channel 5 drama filmed?

Those hoping to get their teeth stuck into a new drama are in luck. The Catch is the latest psychological thriller from Channel 5 and has a star-studded cast list, including Jason Watkins, known for The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies, The Crown, Des and W1A, Welsh actor Aneurin Barnard, whose had roles in Peaky Blinders, Time, The Goldfinch and Dunkirk, and Poppy Gilbert, who viewers will recognise from Chloe, Stay Close, Leonardo, and Perfect Addiction.

The new drama follows Ed Collier, a proud husband, father and local fisherman determined to do whatever it takes to keep his family together. But when rich, handsome younger man Ryan Wilson enters the life of his daughter Abbie Collier and threatens to take her away from him, Ed finds his life spiralling out of control.

The series is set to be full of twists and turns with secrets and lies, including from Ed’s own past, exposed as he attempts to discover the truth about his daughter's new boyfriend before it's too late. You can read more about The Catch's cast and plot here.

Much of the series was filmed at a harbour, and while The Catch was set against the hauntingly beautiful coastline of the south-west of England, the drama wasn't actually filmed there. So where was The Catch filmed? Here's everything you need to know about The Catch's filming locations.

The series was filmed in Ireland. Director Robert Quinn explained: "There are many reasons to come to film in Ireland, two of which are that it has great crews and it’s easier to film here. I don’t think we would have had the same versatility at locations in England, and at the harbour we were working in tandem with the fishermen.

"Where we filmed looks like an English fishing town. I’ve shot in Whitehaven, Morecambe, and other coastal towns, and Balbriggan harbour looks the same. We were there for nine days, right in the middle of the harbour, and I doubt we would have been able to have had that access in England. I love the idea of people watching this and thinking it’s England when it's not. I love that."

Speaking about filming in the harbour, Jason Watkins said: "I loved going out to sea. I was allowed to pilot the boat - when you see us at sea, that’s me doing all the steering. There are shots of us sailing in and out of the harbour, swinging around, accelerating, and that’s all me. I had a lovely guy called Jack who took us out on his boat, which we used, and he taught me how to steer. I loved every second."

The Catch starts on Channel 5 at 9pm on Wednesday, January 25. For more showbiz and television stories sign up to our newsletter here.
