The cast of a drag parody show based on the beloved television series Kath and Kim have revealed they had to contact the police after receiving death threats.
After a series of sold-out shows in Melbourne, The Fountain Lakes In Lockdown: A Drag Parody Play is making its way around the East Coast of Australia. But according to the show’s writer and lead Thomas Jaspers, the parody hasn’t received rave reviews from everyone.
“There have been a few hissy fits from far-right snowflakes who are very upset that there’s men wearing dresses,” Jaspers told news.com.au.
“Generally speaking, it’s pretty silly stuff … but there have been some pretty serious comments that we’ve had to take a bit more seriously, where people are threatening the safety of the cast.”
Jaspers said that in one town, they had to get in contact with local police but claimed the support from police was “amazing”.
“They said that they’ll be on-site for the event to make sure that if [the people sending threats] do mobilise, they won’t be allowed anywhere near the venue or anywhere near the team,” he said.
The Fountain Lakes In Lockdown: A Drag Parody Play stars RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under runner-up Art Simone as Kath, Jaspers as Kim and drag queen Leasa Mann as Sharon Stryszlecki. The parody show takes place in Fountain Lakes in the middle of lockdown. Kim is attempting to become TikTok famous, Kath is worried that Kel is an anti-vaxxer and Sharon has become a contact tracer.
Originally, the show was only meant to run for a week but after it was such a hit, receiving some A+ reviews, they decided to take it Australia-wide.
Thankfully, Jaspers says the cast isn’t deterred by the hateful threats. In fact, he’s got a message for them.
“You don’t have to come. It’s actually got nothing to do with you,” he said, per news.com.au.
“We’re doing this show for the people that choose to come along to it. If that’s an issue for you, do not come!”
