The Burnley decision that has left Leeds United ‘favourites for relegation’

Another successful weekend for both Everton and Burnley plunged Leeds United into further insecurity towards the bottom of the Premier League. It leaves the Whites just two points outside the relegation zone with their survival fate out of their own hands.

It looked as though Burnley were destined to be the team that would join Norwich and Watford in the Championship next season but their revival under interim boss Mike Jackson has been nothing short of extraordinary. They have picked up 10 points in their last four games and have moved out of the bottom three.

Because of that run of form for the Clarets under new management, former Premier League goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen is worried for Jesse Marsch’s side. When asked on the most recent episode of the GegenPod if Leeds are favourites to go down in his mind, he responded: “Yeah, sadly I think they are. I think Jesse March did well, they’ve actually had a decent run of form but it just happens that the teams around them have done the same.

“It’s an unwritten rule that there’s always someone who’s going to put together a run and that’s definitely been Burnley because how many times have we sat here and talked about who was going down? It was definitely Norwich, Watford and then Burnley all the way through so that’s the big surprise that they’ve managed to dig out results.

“They haven’t been brilliant, let’s be honest, it hasn’t been fantastic football but they’ve just got the job done until this point. I still see them getting more points in the games they’ve got left so I fear for Leeds.”

Anyone who has supported the Whites for more than a couple of years will know that they never do anything the easy way. Last season’s rather comfortable ninth-place finish was very much an outlier as Marcelo Bielsa’s side were never under any kind of pressure to find wins at the vital stage of the season.

Normal service has resumed this term and those fans will be desperate to see Marsch and his players pull something out of the bag in the last few weeks. Four cup finals now follow for Leeds whose top-flight future rests solely on whether they’ve got what it takes to get results when it matters most.
