The brutes jailed for vicious attacks on women in the North East

Brute Matthew Stevens subjected his victim to a terrifying ordeal after she refused to have sex with him - leaving her for dead in a grass bank.

The brute was jailed for 29 years this week after being found guilty of attempted murder. During the attack Stevens kicked and stamped on the woman and stripped her naked.

It is just one of the terrifying incidents heard in courts across the North East where woman have suffered at the hands of men, with one man found guilty of murder after brutally stabbing his wife 78 times.

Here we look at some of the crimes to go through the courts:

Matthew Stevens

The monster tried to murder a woman he met on a night out was branded an "animal" as he was caged for 29 years.

Matthew Stevens made every woman's worst nightmare come horrifically true, subjecting his victim to a sustained ordeal after she refused to have sex with him. He kicked and stamped on her, stripped her naked, dragged her into wooded undergrowth and tried to finish her off before taking her jewellery as a trophy and leaving her to die.

A court heard she was found "by a miracle" early one morning last March by a dog walker in Brunswick Village, Newcastle, and she was so badly injured police initially thought she was dead. She was hypothermic, had multiple injuries and her face and head were so swollen she was unrecognisable.

Stevens, 28, was found guilty of attempted murder, and sentenced to 29 years in prison.

The court heard Stevens has 13 previous convictions, including for battery to former partners and harassment.

For the attempted murder he was jailed for 29 years with an extended licence of a further three years. He was also given a restraining order banning him from contacting the victim.

Harry Turner

Harry Turner (Durham Constabulary)

Harry Turner was found guilty of murdering his wife after stabbing her 78 times.

Turner, 54, was facing trial at Teesside Crown Court charged with the murder of his wife, Sally Turner - which he denied.

He admitted manslaughter on the grounds of loss of control - which the Crown did not accept.

But a jury found Turner guilty of murder on Wednesday, February 22 and he will now serve a minimum 17 years in prison.

Grandmother Sally, 50, sustained multiple stab wounds at a home in Cuthbert Avenue, Durham, on June 22 last year. She was found dead by her daughter with Turner's wedding ring lying nearby.

Dane Turnbull

(Northumbria Police)

The control freak left his girlfriend fearing she was about to die by strangling her has been jailed.

Dane Turnbull had become increasingly controlling and jealous and dictated who his partner could see and talk to while demeaning her abilities as a mother and girlfriend, threatening her with violence and calling her names on a daily basis.

After a drinking session last October, his emotional abuse turned physical when he pounced on her and gripped her throat so hard for around ten seconds she struggled to breathe. Now the 36-year-old, of Brinkburn Avenue, Gateshead, has been jailed at Newcastle Crown Court.

Turnbull, 36, who has 31 previous convictions, including for domestic-related harassment and battery, pleaded guilty to controlling and coercive behaviour and intentional strangulation and was jailed for three years and three months and given a five-year restraining order.

Martin Shaw

Martin Shaw, jailed for offences including assault (Northumbria Police)

A terrified woman was strangled, had socks forced into her mouth and was hit with a golf club during a shocking attack by her former partner.

Martin Shaw subjected his vulnerable victim to a traumatic ordeal in her own home, during which she feared she would die. He then staged a three-hour rooftop stand-off with police, during which he threw roof tiles at officers, injuring one of them.

Now the 54-year-old thug, of Edendale Avenue, in Blyth, has been jailed at Newcastle Crown Court. The court heard the victim had been in a relationship with Shaw for around ten months but last April it ended after she accused him of assaulting her.

He was released on police bail with a condition not to contact her but turned up at her home in Blyth on May 10 around 11am on his bike and with a golf club.

He pushed her and she fell onto the sofa and floor and he hurled abuse at her then grabbed her and pushed her on the sofa again.

Shaw then went on to hit the woman in the leg with the golf club and when she managed to run out of her home, he stole her purse and contents, including her bank card and £135 cash.

Police turned up and found her in a distressed state and she was taken to hospital and was found to have cuts, swelling, bruises and scratches to her face, neck, arm, hand, leg and nose and had lost multiple teeth.

Shaw pleaded guilty to assault on the basis he forcibly put socks and his fingers in her mouth and that she bit down and when he pulled his fingers out, it dislodged two of her teeth.

Shaw, who has 21 previous convictions, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, theft, assaulting an emergency worker and criminal damage. He was jailed for three years and given a restraining order.

James Mason

James Mason, 25, was jailed for eight months (northumbria police)

A dad violently attacked his girlfriend before he threatened to kill police while armed with a potato peeler.

James Mason breached a restraining order when he rekindled a relationship with his partner and then went on to punch her multiple times after jumping on top of her. When concerned neighbours called the police, the 25-year-old then "barricaded" himself in a room and armed himself with a potato peeler, before making threats to kill and stab police officers.

Mason, of Dowling Avenue, Whitley Bay, appeared at Newcastle's Moot Hall to be sentenced for assault by beating, breaching a restraining order and a public order offence. He had admitted the offences.

The court was told that Mason and the woman had been in a relationship for around two and a half years and had a child together.

However, the relationship ended after Mason committed battery and criminal damage offences against the woman and a two year restraining order was imposed in August 2021, banning him from having contact with her. But despite the restraining order, the pair resumed their relationship in 2022.

Assistant Judge Advocate General, Adam Smith, jailed Mason for eight months and imposed an indefinite restraining order.

Robert Pallister

A drunk thug repeatedly punched and headbutted his girlfriend after downing the majority of a litre bottle of vodka.

Robert Pallister's violent assaulted was largely recorded after the quick-thinking victim dialled 999 and put the phone, which was still connected, in her pocket. It meant the call handler heard most of the attack, which involved Pallister headbutting her up to 10 times and punching her in the face, a court was told.

The 37-year-old brute also punched her TV before he left the woman's Hebburn home, only to return an hour later when the police had arrived. Newcastle Crown Court heard that, during the brief time he was away from the address, Pallister had left the victim voicemails calling her a grass and telling her "there would be consequences for her actions" in calling the emergency services.

The thug, who has 40 offences on his record, including for rape, also continued to be aggressive and call his partner a grass as he was arrested in the street, prosecutors said.

Now, Pallister, of Shields Road, in Byker, has been jailed for two years after he pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage and witness intimidation. He was also made subject of an indefinite restraining order.
