The long-awaited trailer for the fourth instalment of the Bridget Jones saga is finally here and I, for one, am over the moon. It’s been eight years since we last saw what the lovable Bridget Jones (Reneé Zellweger) was up to and a lot has changed. Sadly, we learn that Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) has passed away, leaving Bridget as a widower to their two children. Now, she’s single again, navigating life in 2024 as a slightly older MILF. Consider me sat!!!!
However, as someone who binged all three films from the Bridget Jones franchise just last week (don’t ask), I have some questions. Most notably, why the fuck was Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) featured in the trailer when he’s presumed dead?
Let’s investigate.
Wait, isn’t Daniel Clever meant to be dead?
If you cast your mind back to the beginning of 2016’s Bridget Jones’s Baby, you might remember the film starts with Bridget and her friends attending a funeral. We quickly discover that the service is for Daniel Cleaver, Bridget’s other big love interest played by the wonderfully British Hugh Grant.
However, it turns out that while the noted lothario had been presumed dead for over a year, his body had never been found. That’s a deliciously open-ended way of killing of a character, isn’t it?
During the final scenes of Bridget Jones’s Baby, the camera zooms into a newspaper left on a bench with the headline, “Publishing playboy discovered alive” alongside a picture of Daniel Cleaver.
Brilliant news!!!!
You see, back when Bridget Jones’ Baby was in production, Hugh Grant admitted that he didn’t feel like his playboy character fit with the unexpected pregnancy storyline.
“I really couldn’t fit my character in — he just didn’t belong, so I stepped aside,” he told PEOPLE.
This time around, even though his character wasn’t in the book the film is based on, he decided to step in and rewrite some of the scenes to make it work.
“I loved the script — it made me cry, and I wanted to help with this one. But really there’s no part for Daniel Cleaver in it at all. They wanted him in it, and in the end, they’d done something I wasn’t crazy about,” he said, noting that he “wrote some scenes” to make it work.
“It’s absolutely the best [Bridget Jones book], and I think it’s very funny and very, very moving. I’m not in a lot — I did a week’s work, that’s it. But when you see the film, you’ll be very moved,” Hugh said.
What is Bridget Jones 4 about?
Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy follows Bridget after her beloved husband Mark Darcy died during a humanitarian mission in Sudan, leaving her as a single mum to nine-year-old Billy and four-year-old Mabel. Four years have passed and Bridget is stuck in a rut, purely focused on raising her kids with the help of her friends, and surprisingly, her ex Daniel Clever.
Now, her friends are urging her to dip her toe back into the dating pool, or more specifically, go get laid. This time though, dating is a whole lot different to what Bridget remembers — especially with the emergence of online dating.
If the trailer is anything to go by, Bridget seems to find herself choosing between two men all over again. This time, the choice seems to be between a fling her son’s science teacher (Chiwetel Ejiofor) or a younger man (Leo Woodall) who helped her climb down from a tree and then found her on Tinder.
Oh, to be Bridget Jones.
Who is in Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy?
One of the most exciting things about the fourth instalment are all the returning characters. Of course, Renée Zellweger is back to reprise her role as Bridget, along with Hugh Grant as Daniel Clever. They’re joined by Bridget’s loud-mouthed friends, former pop star Tom (James Callis), potty-mouthed Shazza (Sally Phillips) and blunt yet high-pitched Jude (Shirley Henderson).
Gemma Jones and Jim Broadbent are reprising their roles as Bridget’s kooky parents and Emma Thompson is back as Dr. Rawlings, the only OBGYN who is willing to go along with a silly little ruse about a baby’s paternity.
Of course, there are some exciting new faces joining the mix!
As usual, Bridget’s love interests are two extremely hot men. Leo Woodall plays a younger man pursuing Bridget via Tinder and Chiwetel Ejiofor stars as a teacher at Billy’s school.
Aussie sweetheart Isla Fisher also joins the cast as Bridget’s neighbour Rebecca.
Is there a trailer for Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy ?
Yes, there is!!! I might be biased but I think it’s a goodie!!!
You can watch it below.
When does Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy come out?
Thankfully, we don’t have to wait too long for the next instalment. Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy hits cinemas in Australia on February 13, 2025.
That gives you enough time to watch all three existing films and read all of Helen Fielding‘s novels if you see fit.
